Last week I attempted to walk my child to class during the morning drop off. I been walking him to class without fail since last school year. This morning I went to the front office desk like i do every morning and waited for the office staff to call the classroom to make them aware we were on our way. Not this day. I was told by the principles secretary there was a “riskful situation” and i cant walk my child to his classroom. I told her, I would wait with my child in the front office until the “riskful situation” dissipated. She told me no, a para can take him, let his teacher take him. I then repeated he could wait. We went back and fourth with this dialogue. My son is severely autistic so routine is everything. He was getting extremely overwhelmed as the paras were forced to try and take my child away per the request of office staff. My child threw himself and all his belongings on the floor and began having a meltdown. So I gathered my child’s backpack from the floor and attempted to get my son back on his feet, when I was yelled at by another office staff to seat down. I don’t understand if there really was a dangerous or riskful situation, why let staff and multiple students including my child go towards the dangerous situation but stop only the parent. Why put my child in “unnecessary harm” and disruption of his daily routine, if I as the parent was more than willing and happy to wait with him. Denying access to my child’s classroom is unacceptable. Especially when he has a serious mental disability and this is a reasonable accommodation. It’s been overly important to ensure my child gets to his classroom and to his teacher safely after a transportation incident with the school last year. My son was taking the bus for the second day but due to the schools lack of communication with the transportation department, my special needs child was completely mistaken to be another child. The bus driver and aide attempted to drop him off at wrong stop and called the wrong parent, when no one was there at the stop for him. He was later brought back to the school after 5pm. My child’s safety and well being is obviously not the priority.
From my experience the current Principal of this school lied, in a meeting we recently had. Anytime I ever brought up legit questions or concerns. I would get avoided or he would constantly deflect from the real issues at hand. He was also dismissive to me by saying I was being used in “adult games” regarding another staff member, which was very unprofessional. I asked for reasonable accommodations for my child and it took over six months for the school to help meet my child needs and only after people from the school district needed to intervene. The principal showed great support for the schools SLP KAILEY MEDLOCK who refused to take my child out for services, fabricated his speech log and continued to try to interfere in my childs services, which caused
temporarily discontinuing my child from receiving the services he deserves morally and legally.
