The interpreter working here on 1/10/24 deserves a raise for sure! Very insightful and charismatic!

Historical interpreters often sidetrack or speak out of order or generally include details that assume prior knowledge. The woman working here was straightforward and explained the history well along with being approachable. I almost wish I was friends with the interpreter so I can gain more wisdom from someone who explains history efficiently/effectively!

As for the site, it’s well preserved, and each floor had a paper guide to help fill in the blanks of the actual history. There’s many artifacts and items in the house that sort of help you envision what the past was like. The overall experience was pleasant, and it definitely shed light on the town/school.

I highly recommend checking it out!

This is a Hidden Gem. I have lived here for 55 years and did not know about it. It gives a great historical perspective of life in North Carolina from 1800 to the present time. It’s free but they ask for a donation which after seeing how well maintained it is and the knowledge of the tour guide, you have no problem donating. This is one of the best non-profit organizations I have seen relating to the history of North Carolina. It would be great for kids to give them an understanding of the history of this area of North Carolina.
