Our son has been at CCC in pre-school for a year and a half now, and we love it there.

A key to realize about this special place is that it’s a parent-teacher co-operative, not a daycare. The parents are heavily involved, you can help in the classroom if you’d like, and you’re part of a community. There are definitely a decent number of things you are invited to participate in as parents and as a family – very few are mandatory, and you can buy out of all the fundraisers, but you’ll have a much better experience if you do as many as you can.

In just the first year, my son (and sometimes I) went on trips to a pumpkin patch, a bowling alley, the fire station, the back rooms of a grocery store, the nearby wetlands for a nature walk, and several more. He learned to be part of a group (circle time) and to play solo or in self-run groups (the rest of the day). He made a ton of art, made friends with many different kids, and had lots of free time to learn social interaction, sharing, and problem solving to deal with the strife that every pre-schooler runs into with other kids.

We’ve been amazed how much our son has changed in the year+ he’s been there, and how much he’s grown socially and artistically. He’s also got his numbers, colors, letters, shapes, and is starting to do sight-word reading, but we haven’t had to push those things. They’ve just come up naturally in the course of doing activities that have been fun for him.

As with everything else, I’m sure CCC isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for a art- and social-focused school that allows and encourages a lot of parent interaction, this is a great one.

ps. Just to give my experience re: kids biting/scratching each other: a few times last year my son was the bite/scratcher or bite/scratchee, and each time both parents were notified and a discussion was had with the teacher, the situation was dealt with carefully and kindly by the teacher at the moment, and both kids learned something. and two of the times, the kids who my son was involved in ended up being his closest friends afterwards… kids are funny like that.

CCC is much more than “just a preschool”. It is a community of teachers and parents that highly value an enriching educational experience for each and every child who attends. They explore materials and incorporate experiences you will not find elsewhere. By having the opportunity to participate as a Parent Helper in the classroom as well as contribute my time and skills through a support job and events, I have been a part of my daughters school experience in a way traditional environments cant match. If you want a school where you just drop your kid off and get a report card a few times a year, this is not the school for you. On the other hand, if you care deeply about the education your child receives, and want to give a lasting impression that learning is fun and worthwhile, take a tour during school hours. The school, and the children, speak for themselves.
