Update 7.20.23: there have been several major changes since my original post (new dean, few new faculty, untimely loss of an extremely essential and truly exceptional office assistant), but what hasn’t changed is the standard of excellence from faculty, students, and staff.

Outstanding faculty and staff, beautiful but too small facility to accommodate these incredible artists and students. Most people don’t realize how grueling the lives are for serious, career musicians. They practice and perform constantly, without the seasonal breaks afforded athletes, without on-site (or even offered) physical therapy to combat repetitive stress-related performance injuries, and don’t have anyone on the ‘bench’ to sub for them. The physical component of their performances, coupled with full course loads isn’t for the faint-hearted, but these educators are as compassionate for their students as they are passionate about their craft. The retiring dean, Dr. David Keith, and his amazing life partner, Mrs. Mary Keith, have nurtured, encouraged, and protected students and faculty alike and the retiring director of bands, Dr. Doug Hill, is an accomplished musician who is one of the most genuinely kindhearted people on this planet. Townsend will miss them all, but the school can continue its upward trajectory just based on the remaining faculty and staff. Townsend School of Music is world-class because its gifted music educators are committed completely to excellence without sacrificing their or their students’ humanity.

Fantastic place for any music lover. Great acoustics and minimal outside noise!
