Let me start by saying that your child will grow and be successful no matter what kind of school they go to. Whether it’s a charter, public, private or home schooled. I would strongly recommend doing your research first on MicroSociety Academy Charter School (the enrollment lottery doesn’t really mean anything) This school is not for everyone. There is diversity within the students but not the faculty (look at the photos on facebook for yourself) Here are a few things that I noticed: A lot of the events, activities and raffles are really just about how much money they can make off of you. On the website they are open and honest about it too. It states, “ ultimately the success of the school with a very lean operating budget will depend enormously on the commitment of parents and guardians to volunteer and support the school’s operation.”
Some people may not care and are willing and want to donate whatever is necessary but others might not have that luxury. What do the parents and students get in return? From what I have heard: underpaid and overworked staff, college students fresh out of college no “real life” experience and a handful of experienced staff that might eventually teach your child, you are lucky if your child is assigned to one of the more seasoned teachers. Last but not least, when I had concerns for my child and attempted to contact the executive director she never reached out to me ( not once). The executive director never showed an ounce of compassion.
We are happy we choose “Macs” for our daughter. She’s learning a lot about Finances, job duties, government, and making lots of friends, and I like that it starts late (9 am)
