**Update – Our daughter is now in her second year at River Tech. We are so grateful to have found this school. I had previously been homeschooling, due to our ever growing concerns in the public school arena and even many private schools. We are so glad we took a leap of faith in trying this school. It’s very family oriented, with lots of communication and transparency with the parents. Aside from core subjects like Math, English, History, Science, Geography, Politics, and even Entrepreneurship, (some specific to older kids) there is a vast array of other subjects, such as, Piano/Ukulele, Robotics, Coding, Art, Digital Art, Dance, Singing, and Theater to name a few. Our daughter is excited for school everyday and expresses her joy and love of all the teachers. The school is competency based so no subjective “grades”. They teach the kids morals and values of integrity, kindness, respect, a biblical world view, and embrace the importance of academics. They also teach social/emotional skills, something that is lacking in most schools. Dan and Mary have created a solid school, with admirable policies that we value very much.
I love that it’s competency based, so she can fly ahead in areas where she’s able or get extra help when needed, no matter what “grade” she’s in. I love to see how genuinely delighted the teachers are about teaching and challenging their students. I appreciate the shorter school days that leave plenty of family time and the minimal amount of homework.
I am amazed to look at her schedule and see how she gets to practice multiple instruments, art, robotics, coding, choir, theater and more every week (without me having to run her around ten different after-school classes). I really appreciate that social skills and a Biblical worldview are intentionally taught and how she’s thriving academically and socially. It seems that no matter what topic comes up she says, “Oh, I learned about that at school!” She looks forward to going to school each day to see her teachers and friends, and I think that alone says it all.
