I went to west coast barber college to even out my hair and possibly layering it. Sign on the door says haircuts $8 for adults. When I walk in I’m immediately asked if I was there for a haircut. I said yes, and again was immediately taken to a chair. The student w/ teacher asked what I wanted and I told them. The teacher then explained to the student how to do the cut and started the process. As the teacher was about to leave the student asked the teacher if he would stay to see if he is doing the cut properly. The teacher said when you get into the work force you will not be able to have someone watch you. Do the cut and I’ll check it when you’re done. Well the cut was done shorter than I wanted but this IS a student so I opted to go a little shorter as it didn’t look right. When I was done, I was walked to the cashier who looked up at a sign behind him and said $15. Giving me the price for long hair. That price is not on the door. My hair was not even to my shoulders and I didn’t get the cut I wanted. I reluctantly paid the $15 with a $2 tip. Knowing that I could have went to a licensed barber and got the cut I initially wanted. Lesson learned.
My experience at West Coast Barber College was great! Throughout my time in the program it was always very engaging and fun. There is a good amount of walk ins so you get plenty of practice on actually heads instead of mannequins and the day to day environment is pretty similar to a barbershop so it’s great prep for getting you ready for the shop life once you graduate. They frequently had demos come in from local barbers and people that have been in the business for years and that really helped provide insight on the different types of challenges we may interact with as new barbers in the industry. The instructors are very caring and do their best to help you improve your skills and make the right connections so that you’re already set up at a barbershop once you graduate. Overall the vibes are great and you really do learn a lot to help you on your journey as a barber. Would recommend!
