Two of my children have attended this wonderful preschool for a total of four years. I feel like it’s a well-kept secret, especially for Jackson Heights families who may overlook the school because it’s technically in Woodside. While I think that the focus on “early academics” (reading skills, numbers) in all of NYC and beyond is misinformed and developmentally suspect, Rainbow still gives kids plenty of time to play and explore. I love the science aspect of the curriculum, as well as the fact that the kids’ diverse cultures are honored, and not just on “international day.” Every single one of the teachers has been nurturing, dedicated, energetic, and sensitive to individual needs. Communication with parents is excellent. We have had some differences over the years, e.g. lessons on Columbus Day, but the school directors have always been responsive and open to discussion. The kids have a weekly music class from an outside provider, which I’ve never seen but which seems lovely judging from what the kids have taken away from it. Another plus is parent involvement in the form of sharing talents and cultural specifics. My children have been very, very happy at Rainbow. If you’re wondering about the religious aspect, our family is all over the place in that regard, and it has never been an issue. Non-Christian holidays are included in the classes that involve religion (songs, Bible stories), and the other classes are non-religious. The school is supportive of different gender presentations as well. Thank you, teachers and staff of Rainbow!
First things first, the teaching staff as well as the pastor are great at this school, they are kind and very qualified. However, the director of this school, Ms. Olmez, has exhibited very questionable behavior in my opinion. The school made a mistake which has resulted in us losing a significant amount of money. Ms. Olmez has not been willing to either apologize or correct this error and instead has ceased all communication. I have been understanding and even offered some alternative solutions, but to no avail. She decided to keep our hard-earned money, even after I explained we struggle as it is. In my opinion, I find this behavior unacceptable and I personally would even call it immoral. We sent our child to that school because we thought we shared the same Christian values. Taking money from poor people and refusing to find a solution to an error made by the school itself is not what I call Christian. We feel thoroughly disappointed in the school and the church board that is associated with this school.
