I have been part of the community since 1996. I used to perform one Spanish mass every Sunday with “El es Rey”. I always wanted to have my kids studying at St. Leo Catholic and my dream came true 8 years ago. But for the past two years, the level of education of the Academy, has decreased dramatically. Even in a religious manner. Students are not treated with compassion. Bullying is a every day issue. Great teachers have left the school and there is a lack of Physical Education. As parents we think our children get decent education because we make the effort to pay for this Academy but sadly when comparing the curriculum with other Academies, St. Leo’s has one of the lowest in the whole Catholic Academies system. That is why I gave ONE star to the Academy while years ago, I was giving five, proudly. Sadly, my children will go to another Catholic Academy next year, hoping St. Leo gets back soon on excellence as it was for many years.

St. Leo School ought to be the bulwark of Corona, Queens, protecting and developing youth to be true leaders of tomorrow. Unfortunately, St. Leo School (along with other schools in this town) are failing its youth.

Corona is town filled with mixed races from around the world, mostly working class families. Parents arrive from overseas with the expectation that children will grow into successful adults, but Corona lacks many of the fundamental factors needed to achieve success, among them a proper education system (just compare it to schools in CT, NJ, mid-western states, Manhattan, UK).

Where does St. Leo School fit into the picture? St. Leo School fails to raise its standards. Parents pay good money so that children get the best education possible but what St. Leo School offers is well below acceptable standards (by acceptable, I mean producing a student body that has a high success rate of going off to universities the likes of Cornell, Harvard, Oxford, Princeton, Stamford, UPenn).

Having graduated from St. Leo School myself, I remember countless frustrations and asking myself, “Isn’t there something more? Why aren’t we ever exposed to medicine, law, finance, engineering? Why is bullying allowed? Why does my teacher bully me?!”

The teacher staff was highly inadequate and did not strive to push themselves – lacked any type of innovation in their thinking or teaching. Having seen other schools, I am highly disappointed.

Looking around the town of Corona today, I continue to see how St. Leo fails its students. St Leo: Build children to have integrity, bravery, charisma, honesty and be God fearing. How? Institute strict practices and programs (even if you have to raise tuition) and fire bad teachers. Replace them with excellent staff members who bring a passion to raising model human beings. Only then will Corona create true leaders of tomorrow.
