The repairs at school were effectively killing our buzz. I was one of the Porta-Com students, and we were given very little attention, and things were repeatedly taken away from us, some of it because the repairs, but a lot because a teacher chose it to benefit them. Here are some examples of this:
1. In the last 4-3 weeks, the closest bathrooms (which were pretty gross honestly) were locked during lunch time so that people weren’t on their phones in the bathroom. But for most of the term, the one other bathroom we could use was a year seven unisex bathroom. About halfway through the term, the path to the bathroom was blocked by some construction walls that served pretty much no purpose, it truly felt like they were just trying to annoy us, because it meant we had to walk about 15 minutes to go to the toilet when the other ones were locked.
2. We couldn’t use the small area outside our classrooms where a lot of people liked to hang out in because it was more peaceful and there wasn’t a bunch of people running into you or just screaming randomly. We were told that it was because Duty Teachers decided they wouldn’t be able to go into the area, even though they could easily see into it and they would go into it regardless to kick the people out.
3. This isn’t meant as a dig to the female teachers but as a girl I noticed some of my male friends getting told off for something my female friends were also doing. For example, some of my friends (male) were passing a ball in the area around our classroom, and my two best girl friends were playing piggy in the middle. A teacher went up to my male friends, and told them they were being disruptive, but when she passed my friend dropped the ball and it hit the teacher in the shoulder. She just smiled as my friend apologised.
4. Just in the end it felt like our class and the other portable classroom was always the one forgotten and treated like as long as pretty much everyone was happy it didn’t matter.
But to end on a happy note, pray you have Mr Colvin, because he’s the best teacher ever!!! Also Turutu is the best house, for life.
