I was also in GATE. I attended MLK in the mid 90s. I remember Mr. Machado and Ms. Krumenacher as well. They were best friends and always ate lunch together. She called him “old man Machado” and he’d just laughed his soft laugh. She came up with the idea of having us, her students, eat lunch with them. During that lunch hour, we often had thought provoking conversations. At that time of my life, she was the strongest feminist role model for me. She is the reason why I love to read today and why I love anything medieval! Mr. Machado and Ms. Krumenacher worked hard to take us on field trips and exposed us to the liberal arts, science & cultures we otherwise would not have known existed. They genuinely cared about our academic achievements and wanted the best for us. I’d also like to say thank you.
My experience: I came to this school in January, and I was pretty scared but made new friends. I admit it was really hard for me but I got used to the school. If anyone reading this that is going to new a new student and attend this school soon, let me just say the truth. There are rude “ghetto” people here. But there are also very kind people who will help you no matter what. Stick with the real ones and not the fake disrespectful ones.
I don’t remember Mrs. Clinton (unless she was the crazy black woman), but do remember Mr. Machado and his floppy disk computer, as well as Mrs. K and her awesome English class. Mrs. K was the only GATE teacher I actually liked, and the fact that she made us read REAL pieces of literature (Richard III instead of boring Romeo & Juliet) definitely started young minds thinking early. Be interesting to know what happened to some of them.
