The student never showed me the back of my hair. She said “what do you expect me to do about it” when I clearly had a worried expression after she said she was done. The haircut was not at all what I asked for or what I asked to be corrected by her. The instructor never checked the hair cut. There was no supervision of the student’s work. No one verified the service was satisfactory before I left.
The shampoo was not pleasant. She avoided my scalp (which is what needed shampooing). The student asked what temperature water I wanted, and I said cold to protect my vivid color. She then proceeded to use steaming hot water on my color and stripped patches of color.
The atmosphere is very unprofessional. The dress code is graphic tees and shredded jeans. No one wore any salons attire or apron. The attitude of many of the students and staff is rude and disrespectful. Out of the 30 or so people I encountered, only two smiled.
The service was uncomfortable. The student didn’t speak at all to me during the hair cut, style, or shampoo. There were no pleasantries or even explanations of what she was doing. She didn’t listen to me. She was, however, very quick to express jealousy to her friends that they got to leave and go home.
The price was not disclosed beforehand. Despite the website stating $12, it was $14 for a wetting of my hair that made my color spotty, a haircut that made me cry, and a blow dry that made my hair frizzy.
They also do not return any phone calls. If you want an appointment, you have to go in to make one.
I have been to many schools and beauty colleges for services before – including other Paul Mitchell Schools- and had great experiences. However, this Madison, WI Paul Mitchell location is terrible.
At Paul Mitchell School, not only did my family and I receive outstanding services, but we also left feeling like a million bucks. From haircuts to styling, their students exuded confidence in their craft, and it showed in the fabulous new looks they created for us.

But what truly impressed me was the affordability. Despite the high-quality services, the prices were budget-friendly, making it accessible for everyone to enjoy a little pampering. (Check out Groupon for further savings & ask about certain days of the week for special pricing!)

One thing to keep in mind is that it’s a learning experience for the students, so don’t hesitate to ask questions or speak up if something isn’t to your liking. We found that our feedback was not only welcomed but also helped the students improve and grow in their skills.

Overall, Paul Mitchell School exceeded our expectations, delivering top-notch services at unbeatable prices. If you’re looking for a great haircut or style without breaking the bank, look no further than Paul Mitchell School.

My stylist was very nice but very new. She was only 2-3 months in and was doing a color and cut. The color was well covered and I was fine with it. The layers were okay but the teacher did most of it. The student did the bangs and they ended up choppy and too short. She had trouble with the curling iron and I think special attention needs to be made at shampooing. She didn’t get the back of my head with shampoo and rinse was not complete. She had to use the water bottle at the chair to get more out. Also the water was either good, extremely cold or extremely hot. Maybe too soon for her to take on people? I felt like she should still be practicing.
