The academics are mediocre at best, and will hurt you if you want to get into better schools (I did, and while I did get into all of my top choice schools, it was very blatantly out of all the work I did on the side and my application essays, not from taking non-IB courses (CCHS doesn’t offer IB courses….which is a bad thing) and having my gpa withered from a required, non-weighted, worthless religion course at 7 every morning. The sports are great, there’s no question about that. The art/music/theater courses were pretty typical of any high school when I was there, but I think they’ve changed recently. My biggest problem with this school was how certain religion teachers would outright bully students who weren’t Catholic. These [usually either atheist or Buddhist] students were always really quiet, didn’t want to be in the class but did the work, and otherwise respectful and these certain teachers would taunt them, make fun of them, and otherwise straight-up verbally abuse some students. The one detention I got at this school was for standing up for a friend who was being bullied to tears by a teacher. I think that speaks more about Cathedral and what it was like to be a student there than any sport rankings, report cards, test scores, or fancy (actually pretty typical in California) campuses ever will.
It has been said, “you don’t know what you have until it’s gone”, I assure you I knew what I had when I attended CCHS, and I loved every second. I could go on for hours regarding the rigorous yet fulfilling education I received, the top-tier sport teams that brought me such pride, or the Drama program led by the incomparable Ms. Katie Wilson that rivals the performances of professional companies… Though, what truly changed and continue to change my life are the relationships I built with my teachers who supported and pushed me well beyond the limits I placed on myself as well as my friends who have always had my back.
