As a former English teacher who volunteers at ALC every Friday as a cooking facilitator, I’m gaining a new perspective on what it means to learn–and to have fun in the process. Working with kids ranging from 6-16, we’re turning out some amazingly sophisticated dishes – creme brûlée with a blow torch, cheese fondue, ice cream from scratch, crispy egg rolls that rival any found in Chinatown. Along the way, we’re having a blast – getting to know each other, sharing stories, asking questions, collaborating, making decisions, telling jokes, honing our culinary skills, talking about what really matters. It gets noisy and messy and chaotic in the kitchen – but the kids are learning lessons that will prepare them for the future. There’s a whole lot more going on than just cooking! And every week, I’m challenged and inspired to rethink how kids learn and thrive!
This school has been fantastic for my daughter who has been there for 7 months. The experience has also had a wonderful effect on our relationship. She has grown so much in terms of maturity, responsibility, confidence and knowledge. I am seeing that traditional instruction is actually not necessary and that traditional school was getting in the way of our happiness in general (hers and mine), and her growth as a whole person in ways that really count. Being at the Agile Learning Center is really allowing my daughter to discover and uncover her true interests, talents and creativity. The experience has been quite thrilling and enriching for me as well. The teachers and staff are incredibly dedicated, passionate, creative and talented. I am so grateful that we found the school. We plan to stay through high-school.
This is my son’s first year at ALC and he enjoys it so much. Traditional school environments were not working well for him. Although really bright, he did not really fit into the public or private school systems. He was either bored or frustrated which made for a very unhappy young boy. Since beginning ALC, he has had a huge turnaround. He chooses how to spend his time and if I was ever worried that he would not be learning, those doubts quickly faded. He is surrounded by other young people who have so many different interests, he has explored everything from coding to cooking. It has expanded his learning experience. The facilitators are wonderful individuals who spend the time to get to know you and your child and support their growth. It is a spectacular system and I am so happy to have enrolled my child.
