I’m not sure if this organization isn’t actually just an IRS scam. I was interviewed and offered a job on the Policy team after a lot of confusing communication from the hiring manager and a sheer lack of transparency. When I responded to their offer with a counteroffer, they abruptly rescinded the job offer as if they were insulted that one would negotiate their salary. Realizing their mistake, they called me in a few weeks later and offered me a consultancy so that they had time to sort out their processes before bringing in a new FT staff member. They said that we could discuss the details of the consultancy via email and they’d send me a contract with a start date of Nov 8….Weeks went by with no communication from their end. I sent 2 emails and even texted them- nada. November 8th came and went and they didn’t even have the decency to simply tell me that their plans had changed. What kind of employer ghosts a new hire? One that’s probably a front for questionable activities, that’s who… I really dodged a bullet with this one. If this is their hiring process, I can’t even imagine what it must be like to work there.
I have been a long standing team member of the NOYN and I believe in the networks mission of serving a population thats largely overlooked and under-appreciated. Everyone here shares the same mission and the same passion. From the top down, were all dedicated to serving young people in Newark and Im grateful to be a part of a workplace that values community and improving outcomes for misunderstood students across the city.
As someone who has been able to transcend circumstances that may otherwise hinder the growth of any individual, I have a vested interest in the young people we serve and the work we have committed to do.
I’ve been working with OYN for a little over a year, and I can honestly say there’s no other place I’d rather be. Within this organization, I finally feel like my work is being used for a greater cause and purpose, giving back to a population that tends to be ignored and uncared for. All staff members–from the teachers to the executive team–operate as a family, genuinely concerned for each other and all collaborating to give as much to our students as we possibly can. Great place to be.
