I’m an actual student at Cy-Ranch, and the news didn’t give out the full story. Here’s what’s up:
During the Senior class panoramic picture-taking thing, the students were told to take one serious picture and one “funny” picture. A few students (no more that 25) decided it would be funny to put up the Nazi salute and yell “Heil Trump”.Nobody was actually ever saying anything about Hitler. The administration has dealt with the students involved and given out punishments accordingly. Somebody else took pictures of it happening and posted them on Twitter. Those are the pictures that were later sent it to the local (Houston Channel 2 News) news. It was later discovered by the administration that the pictures were sent to the news along with an exaggerated story by a 10th grade girl who was not in fact even in the picture, but saw other pictures on Twitter and sent them in. The news story that wasn’t entirely true stated that there were 70-some people doing the salute and yelling “Heil Hitler”, and that the teachers did nothing. In reality, there were not more than 25 people doing the salute. The administration has identified the people involved and their punishment is: Lose all final exam exemptions, 1 day suspension, and they are required to go visit and tour the Holocaust Museum of Houston. I understand that the world is angered by the school, and you have every right to be. But please don’t judge everyone based off the actions of a few. Of the 4,000 students at the school, 25 messed up. These are teenagers, they do stupid stuff. It happens. They have learned their lesson for sure. Now, as someone who goes to the school, I know it’s a great school. The teachers are experienced and know what they’re doing, and we have an amazing athletics department. In fact, Cypress Ranch HS played in the 6A UIL Texas state HS Football game a couple seasons ago. Great school.

Seeing these comments I only have one response. As a student here at Cypress Ranch, I feel as though I am the only one qualified enough to speak in the subject of racism and why it had happened. The reason isn’t the faculty but, instead the society we now live in. We live in a time of political extremes, where people are free to be Neo-Nazis or burn down buildings because of Neo-Nazis. Most of the people involved that I knew of did it as a statement. I am currently a Junior and was not involved whatsoever in the actual picture, but I assure you most of these people doing it were simply as a troll. People may say it was horrible but, there are more horrible atrocities out there that people do not bat an eye on. Palestine and Israel? People dying from ISIS? American-Muslims not being able to see their families? It just shows how easily the media can influence the public. Not to mention that most people complaining are coming from the Daily Mail article, which should say enough about those people as is. Academics are a priority here and as a Muslim, knowing many Muslims, I have never encountered any hate that hasn’t ended with laughs. Remember, “Be the Change you want to see in the world.” Complaining on Google isn’t doing much.
