Redwood Day School has made such a difference for our son and family. Our only regret is not starting sooner (he started in 3rd grade, when the school was only a few years old), and we are sad to be transitioning out, but now in 6th grade, his teachers think he is ready to return to general education, with supports in place. While we are nervous, what’s great is Redwood helps so much, both as you enter the school and transition out, guiding and educating families through change.

If you’re considering the school, they are a transitional therapeutic school that aims to close academic gaps as quickly as possible, to try and help the 1 in 5 kids who struggle to read. We have seen kids stay only 1 year, and others stay until 8th grade.

Our son also benefitted from structured, multi-sensory math, civics, structured writing instruction, social emotional support, OT, art, executive function help, after school activities, and recess on the beach.

If you are reading this and worried about your child’s reading, check out Redwood. These interventions are faster and more effective the sooner you begin, and their teachers are highly-trained, patient, and kind — they can help!

Redwood has been an incredible resource for our family. Initially, Redwood provided accessible, inexpensive, and independent evaluations to assist us in understanding our son’s literacy development, while he was a student at our neighborhood school. For the last three years, our son has been a Redwood Day Student and it has made a world of difference for him. During this time, he has made rapid progress in closing reading gaps, deepened his understanding of applied mathematical concepts, and become much more fluent with using assistive technology. It has been our great good fortune to have teachers who are dedicated, tireless, and extremely knowledgeable about teaching practices and strategies for dyslexic learners. Students who attend Redwood experience huge gains in self esteem, as a result of being able to learn in an environment that not only supports their challenges, but allows them to understand and deepen their strengths. Our son has learned so much about how he learns and thinks, as well as how to assess and participate in collaboration with his fellow students and teachers. Redwood is a very intentional learning community and we recommend it completely.
My son who is a current 6th grader recently transferred to Redwood in March 2023(5th grade) and it has been the best experience he has had with school ever. School has been a challenge and we struggled with getting his educational needs met. The Redwood teachers and staff go ABOVE AND BEYOND to help students reach their individual academic goals and they stay on plan.

I could go on about their systematic and very effective approach to educational instruction, but I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge what Redwood does for the self-esteem and self-image of their students. The confidence, joy, and bonding my son has been able to achieve in just a short time leaves me in awe. These things may seem trivial and not pertinent to reading, writing, or math, but these attributes translate to future life skills. Establishing emotionally healthy and productive citizens in our society. Redwood is very intentional about creating more than a school, but a community where those who value education and the minds of the young can come together in partnership.
