After four years of attending suitland high school it honestly was probably the worst academic decision I could make. In the beginning I tried to be a positive freshman in my new school but as a senior now all I ever experience is depression, loneliness, anxiety and suicidal thoughgs every time I walk in school. I understand that administration and security might think they’re doing their best but they’d be more focused on calling hall sweep every day than focusing on preventing fights that happen on a weekly basis and they have to understand many students like myself it can be difficult for us to get on school in time based off of our location and transportation of getting to school. There are only few teachers that make me feel okay to be alive and positive and that is only my VPA teachers, others teachers like my AP PSYCH teacher Ms.Carter just make me feel like giving up in class and I never try to disrespectful to her but she really makes me feel that way. The only highlights I’ll have for my entire 4 years of attending suitland high school will just be my prom night and graduation day, getting to go out and eat with my family after I get my diploma because those are the only two where I can finally say I have had enough of the misery every weekday and can now look to my future in the art university I will be attending. The only lesson I have taken to heart at suitland high school is that it’s best to let the past day and just focus on your future. I don’t want to disrespectful a school I attending for four years now because if it wasn’t for this school I wouldn’t have met all the wonderfully talented friends I have met here but if I could’ve told my younger self to go to a better school with more positives than negatives to avoid the stress that isn’t necessary I would have chosen the better school because nothing is worth having depressed thoughts every weekday you wake up in the morning.
I mean it’s a school I’m taking 2 stars off b/c there are cockroaches literally everywhere and all my Annex friends know something is up with the pipes, that “water” is like a good 40% rust if not more. The main building does not have the water issue, but there are still bug problems. The water in the Annex is not safe to drink and as a result, many water coolers have to be delivered to the school. In the Annex, there is only one I know of aside from the cooler in the admin office. It is located in the art hallway, a place for Visual Art students.
Suitland roaches range from slightly longer than a pinky nail when young to 3×1.5” and dark brown. Probably German roaches? There are also ants. Ants everywhere, especially in the gyms. Last year, we had at least 10 incidents with roaches in my PE class. This was over the course of half a semester and I am not counting incidents outside of that class. Some claim to have seen rats in the school.
Picking back up on my brief earlier mention of the Visual Arts program, Suitland has many education opportunities for things that are not necessarily common curriculum. The VPA program is great. We have many wonderful kids in band, chorus, theater, and visual. Another option is the career readiness programs. There are, among other things, H-VAC, Plumbing, Childcare, and Nursing, all of which are taught by good instructors that engage the students. The nursing team are great and help students in need efficiently. But the bug infestation and Annex water need to be fixed. So I’m taking off a star.
I would have zero stars if its allowed. One of the absolute worst schools you could put your child in. The administration is horrible. They lose your paper work, harass you and your child, never answer the phone. They treat their students as if they are already failures and never encourage them. I emailed all of my sons teachers inquiring about his grades and progress and only THREE responded. Only one called with total concern and offered to keep me informed. One felt at 73% in class is fine and soon as I disagreed that its unacceptable then he commenced to tell me my sons issues in class. Teacher conferences are during work hours, so in order to speak to your childs teacher you will have to take a day off from work. The buses are always late 30-45 minutes, unless the teacher marks it properly your child will have an astronomical amount of tardy marks that were beyond his control. If you can avoid enrolling your child here please do so.
