Though the facilities are dated, I much prefer the bricked and charactered buildings over cantankerous concrete construction. As a pupil at T.P.S., I always had a deep fondness for the facilities, as they felt unique, sturdy, and had a hearty sense of history about them. As a former-student, I have an incredible respect and fondness for the facilities, as their unique character and build lends me a sense of identity to my early childhood that nary a thing could so enchant me.
The school is built on a harsh hill (all the better for exercising, especially as children enter their puberty), bespeckled –nay– bejewelled by native flora and an intense feeling of nature and intimacy with natural world. I truly cannot emphasise enough how much of the school grounds are covered with native plants — I feel incredibly lucky for having spent so much of my early childhood surrounded by beautiful indigenous plantlife.
I met my closest friend here, and I always felt very supported and comfortable within the school’s small community. The teachers were always delightful, and I was first introduced to my primary interests of music and performance through Performing Arts class and Junior Rockers.
The school’s location allows for a wide-range of young people to meet each other, and –though we didn’t know it at the time– I fell in community with many other young queer people. One of these people, my closest friend, has supported me immensely through what years we’ve had on this Earth, and I’d never have met him were it not for Tinternvale Primary School.
