I know, from talking to parents in the community, that a lot of people chose to transfer their kids to Thomas or somewhere else entirely, without even checking out Christie for themselves because the online reviews are mostly negative, even though they are very outdated. Let me just say, though, we’ve been at Christie for 3 years and I can’t say I understand why anyone would want to transfer out. I’ve been impressed with the positive attitudes of every single teacher and staff member I’ve come in contact with. Mr. Steele, who has been our assistant principle, is now the new principle this year. He is very open and transparent with the parents. Every teacher has a blog so the parents can know what their kids have been working on. Some will say, “but it’s a Title 1 school…” and imply that our kids will be at a learning disadvantage because of that. However, BECAUSE we are Title 1 we are able to have more specialists, and more funding for programs that other schools don’t get. One of the most awesome examples of this is the new “Learning Commons” in our library which has all sorts of robotics, engineering, drama, and technology-rich problem solving collaborative spaces for more hands on learning opportunities. We are the first school in PISD to have this kind of enrichment space and everyone is super excited about it! If you are moving into the area, come visit the school before you make your decision.
If you want your child to get one on one time this school is not the place for your family. My son went threw a stage of frustration and now he is labeled that kid!! Kids are mean and cut in line and say hateful things but if my son’s reacts to this he is the problem. It’s sad that a school as recognized as Plano cant take the time out to see what’s really going on in that school and do something about it! I am pulling my son out at the end of the year to go to a smaller and a better school with communication between the staff and the children. I will not tell my son it is ok to let people walk over him or say rude and hateful things and to expect no reaction from him. Not once has the counselor talked to myself or my son but they are “worried “.
Our experience with this school overall definitely has not been a positive one! My daughter has ALWAYS loved going to school until she came to Christie for 5th grade. I am sad to say that the staff has been overheard speaking poorly about some of the children and parents on more than one occasion. I read a previous review that mentioned the lack of one on one the children get and I agree 100% with that. Class sizes are close to 30 students with 1 teacher. If you believe in individuality, this is not the place for it. I am giving one star because the camp they offer for the 5th graders. Out of the entire school year, it was just about the only positive experience, and that was because the YMCA staff that ran the camp was phenomenal.
