I’m not sure if those same teachers are still there who’d halt a whole class to make a spectacle out of the quiet student that just so happen to day dream for a moment, or if they still make kids wear twisty shoe laces if you couldn’t tie your shoes correctly (can’t have air plane laces!).
The education was fine! I definitely utilized the cursive that was taught to us at the age of 5-7, well up until I transferred out and realized that no other schools enforced it as much as this one did all those years ago.
The sports aspect, gym, was alright although I didn’t quite appreciate running in alphabetical order and trying to match the speed of the fastest child. On the other hand Pinball (dodgeball plus) as a game was certainly entertaining.
I will say, the ringing of those bells during Mass has never left my mind, for every time I hear another pastor in an entirely different location recite those same lines my mind auto fills in where those nails on a chalkboard bells would ring.
After rereading my old daily journals we were instructed to write I realized how hard I was trying to ask for help through these writing prompts because of the bullying I endured, and yet when ever we turned in our journals to be graded I didn’t quite receive a meeting to discuss these feelings, rather I was told to “keep practicing your penmanship! I can’t understand what you’re trying to say!”
The parking lot certainly was a fun time at recess. Sitting on the “grassy” (dirt with a few rocks) buffers between the street and the lot is what I recall as students were so clique-y to the point of a full class exclusion. Teachers would see that as perfectly acceptable however.
I’d mention the music hall trailer where the orchestra kids would learn to play instruments, but the instructor that attempted to teach me is no longer working there. Although this individual definitely continued to belittle me outside of school hours while I still tried my best to pick up on how to play by attending private lessons.
Over all I’m quite pleased with never having to return to this hoity toity school, but will forever have those memories and more burned into my skull of how I, the average B student, was never quite welcomed as a person.
God speed.
