Nothing is perfect and I believe this is true with Knox. It has some great things and some areas of concern. Not all gifted kids are created equal. There are self-directed gifted kids then I think there are the gifted artistic kids that have great ideas but need focus and some structure. For the self-directed kids Knox would work great. Knox for my son Knox was good until 5th and 6th grade. These grades because of the unconventional way they were taught were suited to more self-directed gifted kids. These grade (when my son was there) were run more like a Montessori. At times they would talk about whatever came up. They would watch educational game shows, talk about technology, and sometimes have long recesses. In 5th grade they learned math via an online module called 10 Marks. If they had questions the process was to use the online tools in the program, then ask a friend (which sometimes the friend was wrong), then ask the teacher. In 5th and 6th grade math was not taught frequently. They might teach for a week or so, then not come back to it for a couple of weeks or months and expect the kids to be proficient. The teachers said the English was incorporated in certain building projects. When my son got to 7th grade he did not understand basic sentence structure and had limited vocabulary. All his AIMs scores in 5th and 6th grade trended downward. His 6th grade English AIMS score was Level 2 (Partially Proficient). He did all the work assigned to him and does not have a reading disability. There was very limited social studies/history besides current events. They did have creative building projects and did reflect on their thinking process which I thought was great for academic creativity. However, I felt there was too much of this and not enough emphasis on the basics. I have voiced my concerns to the Principal and 6th grade teachers (who moved up from 5th grade at that time) that the creative projects were great but I felt balancing that with frequent basic Math, English, and Social Studies might be beneficial to better prepare the students for life after Knox.
I have gone here since kindergarten and looking back to it I have loved every moment. They have a wonderful program and a special way which kids can learn hands on and engage. Students have a lot of freedom but not to a point we’re there’s no lesson of sort. Plus the principal is amazing and so kind. I would most definitely recommend this school.
I went to this school from 2nd to 6th grade. The teachers and students were all really nice and understanding. We were able to do so many fun projects. I always got the help I needed no matter what. When we had fundraisers, they would always buy things that would positivity impact the students learning. I miss the place so much!
