Emphasis in this school is on the honor roll students – the guidance counselor my son has (Miss. Lutzman) is friendly but useless when it comes to actually DOING something when he failed his grades (Attention disorder) last year for 2 subjects. All I got is a bunch of websites to check. At that time, the ast. principal actually did try to help but it cost me an arm and a leg to get these people moving. This school elected not to have a homework room and sitting down with teachers proved unsuccessful as my son due to the nature of his ADD forgets to turn in homework. Don’t think the counselor and teachers work as a team trying to make kids succeed because they don’t. You are on your own here and so is your child.
Absolutely outstanding experience for our children. We have one graduating this month, a Junior and a Freshman next Fall. There is something good for everyone to get involved in. Our oldest participated in the Da Vinci program, which is a focused Engineering sub-curriculum, and our Junior has been deeply involved in a their vibrant JROTC. They both have thrived in this top-notch learning environment. Of course, one has to make the effort, but our kids are leaving Merritt Island very well-prepared for college and beyond.
When I attended this high school, many of the teachers could not care less about you. They prefer the foot ball team and give them easy A’s because the school was excelling academically. Most of the football team I knew were passing around steriods during class. Many students reported this behavior, but it never got any where. Those same students showed up every day and passed all their classes with A’s thanks to the teachers who were coaches. The football team were a bunch of frauds. This was class of 2013.
