The regulations for early kindergarten admission are very unclear and biased. When inquiring they inform you it is based on social and academic readiness of the student. You go through testing to find out if you have a chance. When my daughter (who is very high end of average) is tested I am told she is unable to be placed into early kindergarten. The test shows that she has an IQ of 110. The normal IQ of an incoming kindergarten child is 100 with a plus or minus deviation of 15. Apparently the cut off for placing early is 116. That means that a child has to be SMARTER than the other children going into the same class. The only thing keeping my 4 year old out of kindergarten is the fact that she chooses to not color in the lines (this is the only part of the testing that she was below average)! I pleaded with the superintendent of schools to allow me to teach her this skill and retest right before the school year. The answer is no, no thought before answering, just plain no. This is completely absurd that a child has to be smarter than their peers to be allowed to be with their peers that they have been in preschool with for 2 years already. If the school board is unwilling to allow children to come into school early (because they feel that older children in a class are more likely to be a leader) they should not even tell people that they are willing to evaluate the child. The peraon who made the decision has never even met my daughter. They have taken one test and made a final decision.
This morning our family attended the character breakfast that recognizes students who are excelling. What a great way to spark some enthusiasm in our students mid school year!!! Thank you to all the teachers and administrators at the school who are reinforcing positive attitudes and great behavior and outstanding academics.
the teachers were really good
