Mesa Ridge High School seems like an average high school, but what is unknown is that it is a clingy small town environment in Security, Colorado. I would not recommend sending your children here unless you are an administrator, work in the district, or know the counselors personally because otherwise your children will be given little to none assistance with college and be mistreated the four years they attend. I am military parent and have experienced seven different school districts and district 3 has proven to be the worst. My child had a 4.2 GPA was involved with everything (including sports and clubs) and had over 200 hours of community service and after multiple times of my child personally going down to the counselor center they gave her scholarship applications, however all of the deadlines were 2011 or 2012. However, the children who are in the peer tutoring program within the school, that the counselors set up, have all been notified of multiple different scholarships from this year and have been given a hand in completing them.
Other than the lack of help with college the academics are not great. The school received a grant to help students pass AP exams, but in departments like Science it did not do any significance because the teacher does not know what they are doing- only 1/30 biology kids passed the exam. Other than that the sports programs are good in some areas like football and girls basketball, but in anything else pretty much blow in everything else. There are a few coaches who have been coaching for eight years and still fail to hold any preseason practices or develop any athlete’s skills, and do not even make them practice during the season, and the athletic director has been notified various times and will not do anything about it. So for all military parents who want their kids to succeed at a sport other than football or girls basketball send your kids to Fountain Fort Carson High School.
This school does not enforce the importance of education. They are only concerned about your child graduating from high school. What happens after HIGH SCHOOL? My daughter attended school @ Mesa 9-11 grade. Played basketball for them the entire time. She did NOT want to attend her last year there. Said she wanted a different experience. We moved to another state, and she experienced REAL EDUCATION. All the kids had GOALS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL; and that’s all they talked about. She was so depressed, not knowing much about GPA scores. Finally finding out that hers was too low to get into the college of HER CHOICE; She only had 1yr to complete her mission. My daughter worked hard that last school year. Ended up getting a scholarship (as did MAJORITY of her new friends) to play basketball at a excellent college. Mesa never expressed the importance of their GPA’s. Thank God for stepping in and SHOWING FAVOR to my daughter. If youre looking for a good school, keep looking….its not Mesa. All they care about is winning their games.
