This school is so full of itself. Most of the students here don’t even have common sense, it amazes me that they even got out of grade school. Since this is a project based school most students leech off of the 1 or 2 smart kids in the class and take credit for it. Most of the projects we got assigned had to be done in one week but they were so simple, there was just tons of simple things to keep you busy for that week. Honestly you could get the project done in one night but most group members just acted like a simple task would take all day, Students would struggle to get everything together at the last second because of their absolute incompetence. Ways to pass in this school is just become a teachers pet and present some bullshit you came up with the night before, if the teacher likes you enough it doesn’t really matter what you have done they’ll just pass you. You could bust your ass trying to do other team members work but since the teacher doesn’t like you they’ll just pass everyone but you because everyone took credit for what you did.
There was a girl that was in my friends group that didn’t even know how to use google my friend had to sit and explain how to type something in a search bar, the people here should win an award honestly you really have to try to be that stupid. This same girl was in the top of our class, had straight A’s she also had the worst SAT score out of anyone in the school.

I found out what I’ve been having since I was a child was called a panic attack. I would run to the office crying unable to breath or talk and they would force me to talk to them, claiming I was on drugs. They called my parents and told them they though I was on something. I had no idea what was going on I just knew I had these all the time but you would think a school nurse would know what a panic attack is apparently not. I would come in with these often sometime even throwing up but they still didn’t let me go home “there’s only one hour of the day left you can make it”

One day the counselor at the time (Miss Cole) took me down to the office, I asked what was going on and she said nothing everything’s fine but we walked in the nurses office and the tone completely changed “I need you too take off you clothes” I was in shock, I didn’t know what to say or do. “We need to check your body for self harm” I told her no and that I don’t want to do it. She kept telling me I had no choice. After 10 mins or so of me just saying no I realized I was trapped and had no option. Instead of taking all my clothes off they were so kind as to let me change into baggy clothes. Her and the nurse lifted my clothes and poked and prodded at my cuts asking me why? when? touching my arms and thighs. I felt gross I wanted to throw up. They sent me to the bed to lay down and I just cried waiting for what was going to happen next. They didn’t tell me what was going on I asked many times with no response. The nurse came up and tried to hold me “I would be upset if it was me too honey” “We just had to do it” I later found out that the counselor did not get the right away from the principle or my parents now one knew she did this. When I complained the principle acted appalled “We’re going to start a case right away” the case being him just asking Miss Cole if I gave consent she said yes they dropped this “case” and told her not to do it again.

People like to complain about how stressful high school is but this is hell this school scarred me the teachers pick and choose who they pass, most of the teachers don’t even know what they’re talking about they just get their assignments online. Almost every student here is out to get you spreading rumors, acting as if they’re better than you. I once told a teacher I was going to kill myself and she said “you say that everyday when are you going to do it already” It was my worst decision ever to come to this school.

I’ve been a learner (our term for student) at New Tech since my freshman year in 2011. When I visited New Tech for the first time, the collaboration, innovation, and passion I saw was unlike anything I would have imagined for a school. Since I’ve been here, I’ve learned that I had only witnessed the surface, and there was so much more to New Tech. The way we work in Project Based Learning has allowed me to learn the required content in a substantial and lasting way, connecting everything to the world around me. Aside from content, I’ve grown in my people skills. I am now able to get into a group of strangers and complete a major task with very few social bumps along the way. I pride myself on my public speaking skills, something that all of my facilitators (our term for teachers) have nurtured in me for the past 3 years. I’ve formed incredible, lasting relationships with my fellow learners and my facilitators. It’s an incredible feeling to know that so many people genuinely care about me on a personal level.

On another note, I am incredibly excited and feel ready for college. As I have been taking dual credit college courses at North Lake Community College (a graduation requirement) I have no worries about my future college classes, or approaching my professors for help. Through this opportunity I’ve learned how to take a college class – as opposed to a high school class – in a low risk environment. As another graduation requirement, every learner must complete 25 hours of a job shadowing and internship experience. This has allowed me to explore the fields I’m considering going into – not to mention that it’s a great resume booster.

And again, the social and professional skills that are embedded in everything we do here at New Tech have prepared me to go away from high school to successfully make connections and do things for myself. The education I’ve earned at New Tech – incorporating both hard skills like content and written communication, and soft skills like oral communication and collaboration – is unlike anything I could have hoped to get out of my high school experience.

I have no hesitation in saying that choosing to attend New Tech High @ Coppell has thus far been the best decision of my life.

After being at CHS for my freshman year of high school, I transferred to New Tech. I found that being “just one student” out of 3000, having lecture after lecture, taking endless notes, doing worksheets, and having quizzes and tests every week, was not my thing. It works for some people, but what I found to be best, to be the way that I could take charge of my learning, was to go to New Tech. This is for a number of reasons:

(1) I have facilitators/teachers who care about my learning and growth. This includes the staff members too! They know my name, they know how I am, and they adjust class activities based on our learning styles. As facilitators, they’re always there to challenge us, help us, and lead us in the right direction.

(2) The Project Based Learning of the New Tech Network works. It doesn’t just prepare the learners/students for college, but it prepares us for life. I’m able to relate with my parents, both of whom have corporate jobs, when talking about projects, collaboration, presentations, etc, which is way cool. PBL also allows me to take charge of my learning and go above & beyond. I’m able to pursue the things I’m interested in, and I have creative freedom in almost every single project to take it as far as I want, making it as extensive and challenging as I want.

(3) I gain so much experience at New Tech. So far, I have submitted short films to several film festivals, done a video for the CISD school board, gotten a job as a photographer, gotten another part-time job done, done an internship at Coppell’s Child Development Center, taken 7 college classes (which has saved me so much money and time), been a part of 3 student leadership organizations, and taken several AP classes. I’m not sure that I could have done all that without the help of my school.

So, in short, I love New Tech, and if I had to do high school all over again at New Tech, I would.
