1000 MORE Homes? ANNEX TESORO NOW… PLEASE!

Last month the Tesoro HOA hosted a Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce mixer. For those who don’t know, a chamber mixer is a place to “show off” your wares, to increase sales, to promote your business. I thought to myself… nice, BUT why is my HOA hosting a mixer? We don’t sell anything we have no business; in fact our by-laws do not allow us rent out our beautiful recreation facilities. So why host a Chamber Mixer?

The Board Members were introduced. I left the board last November when my husband, Dennis Koontz was elected. John Evans, a board member AND a representative of the master builder of Tesoro, Montolvo Properties (3 of the 5 seats on “our” board are Montolvo seats), began to speak. He welcomed everyone and then told the crowd how he intended to build 1000 homes above our current neighborhoods. 1000 homes! The approved amount of homes to be built north of the last phase was 232. NOW 1000 homes – Water? Streets? Traffic? School? (Tesoro Elementary is close to capacity now)? Safety? 1000 more homes in an area that was approved for 232.

As it stands now (because we are NOT in the city of Santa Clarita) the county of Los Angeles is the governmental body that will ultimately decide IF the builder will be able to raise the number of homes previously approved from just over 232 to 1000. The county of Los Angeles is just too big to narrow in on our issues.

We need to stop the 1000 homes plan and return to the approved 232 home plan. There are many reasons to annex into the city of Santa Clarita, 1000 homes is just one. They are the same reasons we created a city 25 years ago in the unincorporated area we now know as the City of Santa Clarita. PLANNING, safety, infrastructure, local control and tax money; collected here to be spent here.
Over three years ago the held a County “preference” vote and we voted to ANNEX as soon as possible. We need that annexation to happen before Montolvo can turn Tesoro into an overcrowded, unsafe neighborhood. We need to annex before Tesoro Elementary is so crowded that the residents near the bottom of the hill have to send their children elsewhere to school. The school now serves 604 students and we have 900+ homes. IF we add an additional 1000 homes the school will not be able to accommodate the new students (simple math if we double the homes the students will double; elementary schools should not have a population of over 750), but alas those students from the “new” homes will fill into Tesoro Elementary and the overflow will have to go elsewhere.

Please join me in working to annex Tesoro ASAP.
