We have so many things to say about Acton Academy Lake Charles but I’ll just list a few. Most importantly for our daughter (age 6 at the time) was her confidence and self-talk. She was always putting herself down. She had such a strong negative self-talk it hurt my heart! Teens and Adults may experience negative self-talk but not someone who has been alive less than a decade! Learning to cope with failure and actually work thru it was a huge success for her. She immediately tried harder to challenge herself knowing failure was part of the process at times. I am so thankful for that! The second is how she has learned different ways to get the answer. Instead of always asking us for the answer she has the tools to figure it out herself. Some are academic related, life, hobbies etc. She will google or ask Siri how to spell words or to define them so she knows the meaning. I even found her asking the neighbor (who’s 5) how she takes off on her bike, without training wheels. Stella has always held back on her take off for fear of falling. As I watched, this 5 year old girl show her how to take off on the downward slope of a driveway so she can touch. And then they went on to ride together learning how to pull off in the grass to avoid getting hurt. I don’t think she would have looked for alternative methods of figuring things out without Acton’s model – use your brain and then ask a friend for help. The last success is how she challenges herself compared to what I expect. When they started setting goals and making a plan to achieve it, I challenged Stella to finish a goal within the month. Little did I know, she’d finish it in a week. My limiting belief of how fast she could achieve her goal was long beat by her motivation. Nowadays she has moments that she pushes harder than expected and some days she needs to rest. I’m just thankful that it is her decision. She sets her goals, schedule, expectations and if they aren’t met she learns from the consequences. Whether that is her not getting to have a certain reward at home or her getting behind her fellow heroes in the studio, it’s her choice.
This has been the best place for our 5 year old son! He’s grown so much since going here. His confidence has grown so much so that he will speak in front of a room full of kids and parents! He loves being able to play outside as much as they do and not having to sit in desks to learn. He really enjoys learning and being able to do so at his own pace lets him master a skill before moving on. Not having homework allows our family to enjoy family time in the evening and on weekends instead of stressing about getting homework and projects done each night. The level of accountable these kids learn at such an early age is nothing short of amazing! I can’t imagine him going anywhere else. Erin-Beth and the other guides love these kids so much. We have all become such a close family!
