Although I am grateful for the good teachers my sons have had, while attending district 5, arts schools, both my sons went on to attend The SC Governors school for the arts in Greenville. I am angry that district 5 took away the zone exemptions for kids in district 5 to attend the school of their choice these past two years. SC education department boasts that they are a school choice state, but then they leave it to the individual districts to decide if they will allow school choice exemptions. ????? So This state is indeed not a complete school choice state. Anderson school district 5 needs to do some cleaning in their management school district 5 offices. All the people in there are old and stale and they do not return emails when you have questions. Ive felt like Ive had to always fight to get my kids into the better schools that they werent zoned for, because we lived in a bad school area. Ive seen many moms complain that their kids are getting bullied at their zoned school and district 5 doesnt let them go to another school. Do better district 5 and change your policies. And stop wasting money on offices the district doesnt need, That is all
.
Im so glad we left district 5 and SC all together. If your child isnt a straight A student who can play a sport, theyre useless and left behind. Throughout my 6 years dealing with district 5, I was continually met with pushback when advocating not only for my autistic child, but for all special needs children. District 5 fired a preschool nurse due to budget cuts in 2019 which led to many children forced to stay home due to medications not being administered, all the while buying new amenities for sports teams. Teachers are forced into silence at risk of losing their jobs for disagreeing with policies, and the school board is self serving when theyre elected to be selfless servants. Overall, we had great teachers, but due to backwoods, good ole boy policies, district 5 will never get more than a 1 star review from me. SC needs a major education reform, but it can start on the district level, someone just has to care enough in the district to initiate change.
