This is a great school for mature students trying to succeed and who are self driven. Ignoring many of the sad students attending the school, the programs offered like the Medical Magnet Program, Puente and ESPECIALLY the IB program can really prepare students for college. I should know as I graduated from here having earned a diploma from almost all the programs offered. Thanks to them, especially the IB program, college is cake. Unfortunately, these great qualities are often overlooked by both parents and students do to the surrounding neighborhood. It’s also a good school to expose students to diversity (ethnically and economically). Do things right and you will come out academically, socially and ethnically competent; something a lot of people seem to lack.
Its definetly not somewhere I would send my future kids. I came from another school entering the last month of my sophomore year and have found barely anything positive. This is now my senior year I have to attend this crap. The dress code needs to end. The teachers need to get some sence and our counseling office needs Jesus. Everything revolves around that dress code. Nothing else matters. I almost fell back and busted my head open on those ghetto chairs in science class and they wanna talk about some dress code. Fix your school before ever telling me about the dress code. Hopefully this new principle can turn things around…because if not her, someone will.
School counselors are was always “busy” in meetings and are almost never available when a student is in need. When they are present, they are often very rude and try to avoid students in general. When talking to one of the counselors about applying to UCs and CSUs and looking at my grades they said that I should probably just apply to a community college while telling one of my friends to totally go for applying at UCs and CSUs because she had better grades. Aren’t they supposed to encourage us? With all this uncertainty and they throw that in my face. It does wonders to my self esteem. Thank you Andrew Hill counselors.
