We’ll start with my experience there, as I was there a year before he was. I got stuck with a teacher who I will not name, as she is now thankfully retired and is no longer associated with this school. She was AWFUL to me and my only female best friend at the time because we were mainly friends with boys. Every time I wanted to do a group project with my neighborhood (guy) friend, she would lecture me and force me to do it with a girl or do it alone. I did most group projects alone because of this. I loved playing knockout, a basketball shooting game with my guy friends and a few of my girl friends, and the named teacher would be okay with the other girls playing with the guys, but at least once monthly she would lecture me about becoming friends with other girls, even though I thought some of the “trendy” things the girls in my class talked about were boring and that I would be stuck in even more drama than what I was already in. I was best friends with 3 of the nicest and most well-behaved guys in the entire class and she would STILL keep me away from them even though they were some of her favorite students and one of the best influences on me that year. The homework she gave my class took me at least 2 hours to complete, and night she made ME (and ONLY me) write an entire 5-paragraph essay in one night! I was up until midnight that night crying in between writing as I was stressed and still had another hour of homework to do. I understand that I was part of a “Team Quest”, or Academically Talented/Gifted class, but no 5th grader should be given 2+ hours of homework nightly. I loved music class, but Seminole Singers made many of my friends and classmates hate singing because we had to sing a high soprano part in every song, regardless of voice type or range. One of my friends was threatened to be kicked out of the choir because he couldn’t sing a high D! Art class was boring and almost nothing was done during the period given. PE was absolute h*ll, as we would run mile after mile after mile! The “units” that didn’t involve running miles weren’t at all engaging and the coaches would cater the lesson plans to the highly athletic kids, leaving the averagely athletic or physically unfit kids in the dust. If you had to endure the pain of this school year you would be writing a bad review too.
Now to my brother. You’d think kindergarten would teach you how to read, right? Not at Bluewater! His teacher gave him 30-50 state mandated sight words a quarter and he almost FAILED language arts because nobody would help him at school and everyone at home was confused on how to teach him to read these words. No social studies was taught, and my brother didn’t even know the subject existed! I am very happy that he is out of Bluewater and actually learning and not just being stressed out all the time!
