I enrolled my 17 year old in the brand new BJJ 101 class. As an academic and introvert, he wasn’t excited about it but agreed to give it a try. We are several days in, and every class has more smiles during and after the class. You have no idea what an amazing result that is given my son’s personality and aversion to social interactions. The combination of personal attention and amazing culture in this gym is completely unexpected. Bubba (owner and head coach) says “a rising tide lifts all ships” to encourage students to share what they know. Wow, it is working! The students have really bought into this and my son interacts with his rolling partners as if they are long time friends. (It’s actually weird to see).
This BJJ 101 class is a stroke of genius. Knowing the psychological challenges that first-timers have amidst more experienced students, they created a safe place to jump in. They had multiple coaches assigned to this group of beginners. Every time I looked up a different coach was offering 1-on-1 instruction and clarifications to my son and his rolling partner. With the amount we are paying, we have no right to expect such personal attention from their top coaches. They have skill, and personality, and they seem to actually care. That’s something you expect in first-grade teachers. Seeing this combination from a bunch of “fighters” leaves me bewildered. BTW watching the faces of the other beginners during the class, I think my son’s positive take away is the norm.
I am always happy when I get a good deal…but I almost feel guilty getting this much value for my money.
My 8 year old son immediately took to Jiu Jitsu. He enjoys it so much that he gave up baseball this season so he could focus on it 4 times per week. He even added kickboxing into the mix. It’s given him much more confidence and the ability to defend himself if a situation arose. He’s excited and motivated daily to participate.
