I was originally going to wait until the end of my senior year to do this, but I feel as my junior end comes to a close I already have all the information I need about this school. I also want to preface this review stating that as a current student here I am likely putting myself at risk writing this full account due to frequent arbitrary punishments from staff to students which criticize the actions of the staff. Here we go.
First off, let me touch on a few positives of this school.
– There are some genuinely wonderful teachers at this school who provide quality education to students without discrimination and with a level of enjoyment, mainly social studies ones. These teachers are a shining ray of light in many studentÂ’s time at CCHS, and we love them very much 🙂
– There are a good amount of activities here. Our band is amazing despite being underfunded. In addition, there are clubs for both progressive action and conservative action. We have clubs from FCA to a Female Empowerment Club and Cultural Diversity Club. ThereÂ’s literally something for everyone!
– The facilities here are actually nice with the exception of the bathrooms. There are great theatre, facilities, construction facilities, and even classrooms. About $10m recently went to the construction of a two story Fine Arts academy too.
Despite these positives though, many students are very unhappy with the situation here, as am I. Students here are only treated as a number and statistic by authoritarian staff who will lie to you with a smile — or harass you with a grimace. Either way, it wonÂ’t end well.
A big staff of this is staff failing to address problems and focusing on distractions instead. An example of this is the “Principal’s Council” in which Advisement classes elect one rep to a group which meets with the principal twice a semester. Students bring up real concerns to admin here, but instead they only focuses on trying to find “fun activities” for students instead. They only aim to distract you with little fun events here and there. It makes members of the council feel like it’s just publicity and not actually a place to get things done.
Admin cares more about “making memories in high school” than addressing female students’ serious sexual assault cases. More than addressing teachers with shockingly low test scores and approval ratings. More than addressing widespread bullying. More than addressing student suicides. More than addressing school shooting threats. These are long term problems which eat away at decent students, and your COVERUPS only make us lose trust in you. LIVES MATTER MORE THAN NUMBERS. Realize this and gain our trust again.
Your smartest students arenÂ’t focusing on work, instead they are programming ways to bypass your network blocks because their peers are complaining about how they canÂ’t even research due to them. Your normal students arenÂ’t focusing on work, instead they have turned to drugs due to the constant stress placed upon them. You can fix the underlying problems that cause the drug epidemic at this school, yet you donÂ’t because itÂ’s too hard.
Think about it this way – your student body is a melting pot of all different walks. We would have zero problem sharing our ideas if you would make yourself more open. Do a schoolwide election for a small council to work directly with admin weekly to turn Camden from a depressed student body to a nice place. If you want kids to be happy when they come to school, improve their attendance, and REALLY improve their test scores — this isnÂ’t the 70s, a dance periodically isnÂ’t gonna do it.
You have kids here who care. Listen to us, give us a voice, and we will solve the problems you want solved by fixing the underlying ones. In the meantime, I am telling any prospective parents reading, PLEASE do not send your kid here. That’s all.
I had to take time off from my employment to attend the unorganized open house trying to follow the schools action plans in holding an open house today, July 29, 2016.
I waited more then 1 hour in a line, at Camden High School for a chrome book (that I didn’t get or received) then I would have waited, had I waited for a ride at The SeaWorld or Disney!
After being exposed to this lack of organizational skills the line was cut off by Assistant Principal Ms Lykin (or something like that) she said no more chrome books were going to be given.
I explained My sitiation to the rude Assistant Principal telling her I took time off from work to be here since I work a Mon thru Fri schedule to please let me continue to be apart of the line and Lykins then tells me no one else was getting chrome books. They can get them the first day of school!
Why would the school waist my time like that, if this was an option?
I as the Assistant Principal or Ms Lykins would learn to be more professional with the public, organized and understanding of an environment she obviously created when she is saying the final word as if she owns the Camden County school system.
I lost pay due to this lack of organizational skills and I’m a single parent who needs to make money. I cannot afford missing time.
I would have organized it by sending letters to parents to come pick up chrome books by their child’s last name on different dates, instead of the mad house of all last names creating the dangerous setting of a potential attack in a crowded building like that HS not to mention the car damages.
I’m Hispanic and she treated me in the most unprofessional manner as if I were worthless. She told me in an “I own this High School mannerism/I’m the boss” that the students would then pick up what they need on the first day of school.
If they could pick up their cromb books the first day of school, then Why would the school have held a chaos open house creating all those nightmares and safety concerns?
I lost hours of work for nothing because this school has no consideration for the working families or any understanding on how to manage 2000 plus student in the company of their parents not to mention the parking and craziness that happens when everyone is leaving at the same time.
Camden County HS receives 1 star because I couldn’t give it any less then that Making this the most unprofessional and unorganized school I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been in Chicago, Arizona and now here! I’m scared to send my children to a school creating an unsafe situation like the one I witnessed today!
They have no idea or clue how to handle 2,000 plus students or how to distribute chrome books, something so simple to do if they handled it as recommended above.
I know because I do it everyday in a professional environment to more students then 2000 with the only differences being Ipads instead of chrome often but we use Ipads.
I understand the whole Title 1 and top schools in the state things are big deals and the graduation rate is at a comfortable point, and believe me I plan on being a graduate, but what I find hard is actually ‘clicking’ with the school for lack of a better term. The days pass in a blur and nothing sticks with me, no matter how important it’s deemed by a teacher or administrator. I’m not complaining just to be a sensitive millennial, I’m genuinely confused as to why this school clashes with me so much, and I know for a fact I’m not the only one. It’s hard to explain to those that don’t feel the same because, like I mentioned, it even confuses me as to what I’m trying to say. Either way, the reason for my rating is because of the feeling of dread when I wake up on school days, the sadness I get when I see others worried about almost everything, the unanswered questions I have when certain things go conveniently unnoticed until something major happens. It’s just a melting pot and there are too many ‘cooks’ trying to fix it.
