A lot happened at this school in the three years I attended, although i did leave midway thru my 8th grade year. There were fights(lmao most were involving me),arrests, and way too much drama. There’s also quite a lot of bullying but as i never had experienced it, I saw it happen a lot. Plus this schools cell phone policy is stupid like if you check the time on your phone and some full grown adult jumps off a stage and you don’t give him your phone he proceeds to call down all the ap’s and the school sro (which is a complete overreaction if you ask me). Also if your phone gets taken you have to pay 15$. If you really wanna know what happened at this school here”s how it’ll go, numbers in parentheses are the grades and years of the incident
(6) = 6th grace ect.
(8) Literally had a teacher tell me and a friend that he smokes weed but its okay because he doesn’t inhale

(7) one time 4 people went into the choir closet and 8 came out
(8) the fact they added a sro
(7-8) i threw a gatorade cap in the ceiling of the hallway by the gym/the choir and art area in the end of December of 2016 and its still in that ceiling to this very date
(6-7-8) someone defecated on the floor
(7-8) people “pleasing self” in class/ in the bathroom
(7)School hires substitute teacher who makes explicit racist and derogatory comments regularly. After many complaints school promises not to hire him again. School hires him again
(8) Mr Waghorne throwing a student out of his seat
(7) 1 broken manhole
(8) a whole lot of slapboxing which was very fun

This is just the tip of the iceberg if i had more time i could go on but the point is that you see some crazy stuff at this school and you should just keep in mind that the staff and teachers are very far from being the most qualified, trustworthy, or even humane option available. I attended this school for three years God help us all and Godspeed you beautiful creature.
Having been involved in schools across several states and districts – private and public – I’m pretty well-informed about what makes a great school great. Canyon Vista is a GREAT school. Its leadership is positive and proactive. Student needs are first and foremost, regardless of what size or shape those needs come in. Most members of the staff (there are a few exceptions as with any school) love what they do (and it shows), are responsive, make the kids think, CARE about the work they do and the students they teach.

Academically it is on par with private schools. It feeds into Westwood HS, which is ranked 2015 US News 200-something in the country! In terms of activities, they are leaps above the rest. A student can really learn who s/he is and develop passions and interests at this school. They have a lot of opportunities to show case their work. They value health and physical fitness. This school has PE every day and this isn’t dodge ball, this is FITNESS (think CrossFit, mile time trials), which is awesome since for some it’s all they get in a day. The sports teams vary, but is strongly supported and positive.

Both of my kids really miss this school and as a parent, I will always appreciate the fact this school doesn’t just talk the talk, but also walks the walk. It’s an increasingly rare quality for our education system in this country. Kudos to them .

One final note, if you’re new to the area, I would heavily recommend Laurel Mountain as your elementary school over Spicewood. I have been involved at both (substitute, volunteer) and can tell you Laurel Mountain will be the stronger academic and kinder choice of the two schools. Spicewood talks a big game but the rigor, care, and discipline was very lacking.
