I lived at the home for my 4 years of high school, and my brother graduated the year after me. I enlisted in the Air Force and 4 years later transferred to the Marine Corps. I was a weather forecaster in both services, mostly briefing pilots on their missions. I served in Vietnam twice, as an Airman and a Marine. I retired in 1988 and spent 14 years coaching track and cross-country at our high school and junior high in California. For the last 17 years I have worked at the gym on a Marine base, also in California. My older brother attended the US Coast Guard Academy and the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. My younger brother retired from the Air Force. I have a daughter and three sons. My daughter graduated from Wells College in NYS, and spent 21/2 years in Honduras as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Two of my sons served in the Marine Corp in Afghanistan and Iraq. My oldest son is the General Manager of our local water district. My youngest son is a 90% disability from Afghanistan and now works as a heavy equipment operator. The middle son is a supervisor for the San Bernardino City Water District (202,000 + customers).
If you work at the home in some capacity, it’s all about giving, not getting. The people back then certainly believed in those ideals.
Staff is often left alone in dangerous situations, depending on other staff who is not reliable..staff gets injured a lot and no one cares… when you bring it to others attention that there are issues, they make issues about you. I honestly loved working with the youth themself, very rewarding. But the higher ups honestly suck at their jobs. Caseworkers often tell the youth one thing but then the staff another and then they cause an esculation. They will mess with you any chance they get. Dont reward good employees at all..they can fire you wheneverthey want since it is an “at will” job…The pay is nice for around here…but do yourself a favor and find something else.
Building looks nice. I called thinking I could donate something, the lady I spoke with said I couldn’t but she was very nice and gave me a number where I could take the item. I’ve literally never seen any kids here though, even before Covid but I don’t drive past too often.
