Chute Middle School is an undiscovered gem in South Evanston. I believe it is the best school in the City, despite having a large population of at-risk kids. It is housed in a beautiful building (unfairly maligned because of the front entryway) with a gorgeous courtyard garden in the center. Staff and teachers are incredibly kind and helpful, and still put safety and order first. Students are held accountable and encouraged to excel in their behavior as well as academics, and are offered supports like a free, teacher-driven afterschool “homework club” to ensure they succeed.

My son, who struggled a bit in elementary school, has really blossomed under the care of the Chute teachers and staff – and I see that his friends do as well.

Principle Jim McHolland has done a very fine job of finding excellent teachers for this school. The place has a buzz, with cheerful students, and electric teachers. The smiles from returning students and returning teachers the first day of class were predictive: this school is the best-kept secret in Evanston. The kids are safe, the education is strong, and the teachers work collaboratively with one another. Students have strong structure within great planning; they can check the status of virtually anything on the iPad they are each issued by the school. Great education, great social development, and a model for all middle schools to follow. Top notch.
