As a student at Compass I can say that it is a good school but definitely not the best. Montessori is all about following the child and adjusting to their style of learning. From pre-k to 3rd grade I was content if not a little bored but from there I achieved some free will and the ability to think for myself. The materials they had us use worked when I was young but eventually they just annoyed me and over complicated what could have been a simple concept. However, my teachers forced us to use them which seemed very anti-Montessori to me. Needless to say I was very thankful to move on to the middle school. Unfortunately, it really wasn’t any better. I understand that in life you’re going to have to learn how to make compromises and work through things you didn’t want to do but it really upset me that I had to sacrifice my education for lunch duty or go into an occupation that I despised just to get the academic benefits from it. Also, it was very hard to find the motivation to go to lessons or do well on tests because there were no consequences for not doing them. I think it’s a good school but has a lot to improve on and really needs to follow the Montessori way better.
We were asked to remove my son from the preschool after one month. My frustration with the school lies with how the situation was handled, not the fact that he was asked to leave. If he was as violent as they say he was they were right to ask him to leave, but we have never seen this behavior anywhere else and were not allowed to observe him in the classroom so we do not know what was actually going on.

We did not feel that we could trust the teachers or administration because of inconsistencies in their statements. Many of the teachers’ complaints were typical preschool behaviors, especially for a child new to the Montessori setting. This made us question the validity of the more serious complaints.

We were given two days notice that he needed to leave aftercare. Two weeks later we were given two days notice that he needed to leave the school. They said that they would release his records for his evaluation with Childfind but when I requested the records they stated that they would not provide them.

Compass may be a great school for “typical” kids but it is not a supportive setting for children who have developmental delays or behavioral challenges.

9 years ago, it was glaringly apparent that our neighborhood school was not meeting the needs of our oldest child. We were fortunate enough to land at Compass Montessori, after a search for a better fit for our child. After only 3 months of Montessori lessons, and the trust the teachers had in her… our daughter was reading. There is wisdom in the Montessori method few understand. The children direct their own learning, creating an intrinsic value of their own process and knowledge. This is done with small group lessons, no reward systems and brilliant Montessori materials. Our son has also attended since Kindergarten and has been respected, honored and lovingly guided in all areas of his person, not just academics. Compass really educates the whole child, not just school skills. The children are respectful, community oriented, always given compliments on field trips, and globally aware. The fact that is a free public school it just an amazing bonus.
