Were a month + into the school year and I’m not so sure this school was a better choice than our previous school. There’s ZERO communication from teacher’s with the exception of 1 teacher. Kids are literally sitting in class doing absolutely nothing and it’s being permitted by the teacher’s. I’ve heard several teacher’s mention their contracts and well that seems to be the only thing they care about these days. They don’t have to teach or let parent’s know what’s going on in the classroom because they’ll still get paid. And if you don’t know what’s going on as a parent then you’ll never know what’s going on in the classroom due to ZERO communication. Maybe it’s not in their contract to communicate. Is this school better than a WCSD school I’m still on the fence about that really. I think the teachers need to care less about their contracts and care more about the students and what’s actually being taught. As a parents I think it’s a good thing to communicate what’s going on but as a school they lack this ability to do so. Other things about the school are good like the tutoring and clubs. But if your teacher can’t get the kids involved and they still perform their duty then they still get paid but the child gets nothing out of it. I’m mostly down on this school due to it’s lack of communication with parents as you can tell.
I have searched around for schools throughly to find out what fit best with my childs needs. When looking at Coral Academy of Science, I just knew this was the perfect place for my child to go. He started off in kindergarten back in 2015 and we plan to continue our journey through high school.
The administration and the teachers have been great. Their communication with families is phenomenal. I am always aware of what is going on at all times. For me communication is the biggest thing for me because I want to know my childs progress. They may have a small parking lot and play ground be they utilize them to the best of their abilities. They also take advantage of the park they have right next to the school. They even have a gate so the children dont have to walk in the parking lot/ sidewalk to get there.
I prefer this school over any other for my child because I have seen lots of growth with my child, the communication is amazing, and the ratio of students to teachers is smaller then the public schools. It seems much easier to have the students be successful with smaller class sizes.
Our experience at Coral has been mixed… I don’t think the honors teacher last year had any patience for children who were smart, bored in regular classes, and could handle honors-level work with some encouragement – but who were not all necessarily super over-achievers. With that attitude, she did not engage or challenge my child. The teacher this year, Ms. Gordon, has been much better, and we really like her. She seems to understand that not all intelligent kids are necessarily type-A academic superstars, and she encourages a child’s potential and strengths even when they struggle in other areas. The school itself is small, somewhat strict, and sometimes fussy, but decent. Overall we were happy to be here versus one of the huge, struggling public schools.
