WISH I COULD GIVE 0 STARS. I am definitely NEVER recommending Coral Academy of Science to any one. My son was there only 1 month. The teacher (Ms. Souza) should not be teaching Kindergarten. She has no patience, the way she talks to the kids is not warm or caring. She expects 5 year olds to behave 100% of the time. She has absolutely no charisma, nor training in how to adequately capture a child’s attention and/or re-direct focus. That 1 month at this school was terrible, it was emotionally draining, to the point where my child did not want to go to school and he would ask to go back to his previous teacher. The ONLY reason why I moved him to this hell hole, was to have my child excel and be challenged not belittled or treated wrong or being yelled at. I received an email from the computer teacher Ms. Tesser, in one of the sentences she wrote, “He has a hard time staying in his spot when seated on the carpet, keeping his hands to himself, or following other simple commands.” COMMANDS? Excuse me? My dog follows commands, not a child. These teachers have no tact, no communication skills and no business being around kids, especially 5 year olds, because 5 year olds tend to be energetic, silly and care free. I asked for a transfer since I did not want my child to be in Ms. Souza’s class any more, because one day he was playing in his room and he started screaming “Stop! Stop!” and I heard his words in her voice. My child was emotionally stressed, I don’t yell at him in that way and I know my mom doesn’t either.
After the email I received from Ms. Tesser, that was the last straw for me. For my dad, however was a few days before, when he actually asked Ms. Souza “Is he too much for you? You can’t handle him?” The reason for his comment was because nearly every day Ms. Souza had something negative to say. And, I don’t believe in coincidence, because 2 days after that I receive the email from Ms. Tesser about my child’s conduct. Why was I not told before? I am and always have been available to speak with teachers. So then, I emailed back and apparently the Vice Principal was copied in the email. All of this was them ganging up on us. When I went to speak to the vice principal the Monday following the email. She did the typical, “I talk and not listen.” And somewhere in the conversation she said “his problem” as in referring to his behavior being a problem. HOW ODD! I had constant communication with his previous teacher and she never mentioned that to me. All this school wants is your money. Don’t give in. These people are complete inadequate and should not be open.
Needless to say, I spoke with my son’s previous teacher and asked her upfront about my child’s behavior and she said it was normal for a child of that age to go through an adjustment period. And that she understood and his behavior had improved while in her class. When I asked her if I could move him back to her class, she said “Absolutely” and said if she needed to speak on our behalf to the office, she would. NOW, would someone who had a “trouble” child want him back in her class? I wouldn’t. Next day, I was at the office and transferring my child. When I told him he was going to his previous teacher, his little face beamed and his eyes widened and lit right up! THAT…that was all the confirmation I needed.
All that horrendous ordeal is not what a 5 year old should or needs to be dealing with.
Believe me the school is not warm and bright like a school should be, it’s like a jail and kids are made to walk with their hands behind their back and when the children are led out for pick up they march as if in boot-camp. Their “playground” is a complete joke and utter failure. I hope this is read by the principal or the higher up of this school, because I would like to file a formal complaint.
Like any school, you have your good teachers and your bad ones. My complaint is not so much of the teachers, but more of the admin! My daughter and now her sister have been here since it has opened. The year it opened (2016) the staff and admin were on it. Very friendly and prompt with giving answers. You would see them outside talking to parents. We had a car line that needed room for improvement but they were courteous and helped. Fastforward to this school year (2017-18) and its a freaking ghost town with the admin. The car line was taken away due to parent negligence last year. There was not one admin that even bothered to correct the problem. They seemed very unavailable and has left it up to us parents to fend for ourselves during drop off and pick up. Its literally leap frog through the parking lot with no rules. Lots of close calls and parents have taken advantage of this. The vice principal has left half way through the school year (partially for maternity leave) and has decided not to return. This is a HUGE red flag for me that a person of that caliber would take it upon themselves to leave. For whatever reason it is, it didn’t look good. There have been lots of promises that have not come to fruition. We were promised a shade for the playground after many complaints for two years. We keep getting told its coming at certain times and it has yet to happen. The kids safety should be priority, especially during the hotter months. I have volunteered many times to see little 5 year olds have borderline heat exhaustion hiding UNDER the play structure. We were promised a field. That hasn’t happened yet either. Our children will continue to have PE in the lunch room and a small area on the side of the school or in the parking lot. Lack of communication seems to be a huge problem with admin and PTO. Parents need to be more informed. Once that happens there will be more cooperation from children and parents. We are the only charter school to pay semester fees ($175/per semester). How come they’re lacking so many things compared to other charters? Its a bit suspicious to me that we don’t have a breakdown. They’re called consumable fees but why are we still being asked to donate for the classroom if over 600 students are paying that per semester? Not to mention they get lots of funding due to student performance which I hear is awesome. I would def. consider other options when considering this school. Again its not the teachers fault, but mostly the admin and how its being managed. Its a joke.
Having my kids at Coral Academy Centennial Hills has been such an incredible experience. Both of my children have had the most caring and knowledgeable teachers. The teachers at our school know how to scaffold a healthy communication between students and create a caring environment in the classroom. The curriculum has challenged my second grader and fourth grader.
I feel that I can contact the administration when a problem arises and it will be handled in a timely and gentle manner!
The assistant Principal did indeed return so I don’t know exactly what the other parent was talking about. Guess you can’t make everyone happy.
