This is a review of the historical significance of the school building. Deerfield Beach Elementary is the second oldest school in Deerfield Beach and it is still in use. It is the second oldest operating school in Broward County. Another school was built in Deerfield Beach in 1920 but it was quickly outgrown which necessitated the building of a new school. The 1920 school is managed as a museum by the Deerfield Beach Historical Society.

This two story L shaped masonry school in the Mediterranean Revival style was designed by the architectural firm of Thomas D. McLaughlin and Associates. McLaughlin was one of the Florida land boom architects. The school board purchased a parcel of land for $21,000. The Alfred W. Kimmel Company of Pompano Beach built the school in 1927 for a cost of $55,000. The school was designed to educate 1st through 8th grade with the students going on to Pompano beach for high school. The school was added to the National Register of historic Places in 1990. Architecture features of the school include arched walkways, terrazzo floors, Spanish terracotta barrel tiles, and a bell tower with Corinthian columns. There is a one and a half story auditorium wing that seats 277 people. When I went by it looked the building from 1927 was no longer in use. A more modern school has been built directly behind the historic building. I spoke to a friend who works at the school who told me that there is asbestos and mold damage in the 1927 building so it is empty. It’s such a shame that it has deteriorated. The school has a legacy of having educated thousands of students.

I am the parent of a child who has attended Deerfield Beach Elementary for 5 years; since kindergarten. Although my child only has one year left of elementary school my child will be attending another school for 5th grade due to bullying. Unfortunately, after many attempts of trying to resolve the bullying issue on my own by contacting the school and speaking to the school counselor on multiple occasions, there were no repercussions taken with the child bullying my child. This issue has been going on since the beginning of the school year. I recently spoke with the school counselor, but apparently, her time is more valuable doing anything else except dealing with the well being of the students. If you are concerned about your child getting bullied, DO NOT send him/her here. It will not be handled correctly.

I love DBES! I attended for 2nd- 5th grade, and was really glad because it was way better than the previous school for me. This school has great learning method for regular classes, autism, and high achieving. I totally recommend it because your child would get a great education, great success, and have great support around them! Also, thank you the staffs in 2016-19 for making my years there amazing!
