Teachers calls me every single day about my sons behavior and he is only in Kindergarten. Yet when I tried to speak to her, I was referred to the Dean. It is really simple stuff that they are complaining about, almost as if they are not equipped to handle children. The teachers need better communication. My son is at risk of possibly being suspended tomorrow because the Dean told me his active behavior was a warning today and since the teacher complains everyday, Im sure theyll suspend him tomorrow. Im looking for a public school to enroll him into atp. I thought the 1st year at a charter school would make it easier to transition him to a public school for next year but apparently I was wrong. Not all the teachers are licensed to teach which you wont find out until 5 weeks into school. But you will be able to tell because starting the first week of school and every week thereafter, they are tested to see where they are at in learning when its his first year and the teacher hadnt taught anything. Also one of the teachers was giving out work from 2nd grade but claimed he was behind and put him in iep for additional funding for school. My son has never had any teacher complaints and hes been in daycare schools his entire life and also went to preschool so hes actually ahead. Lunch is early like 10am early so parents have to provide snacks because the school cant afford them. They also cant afford bottled waters so parents provide it but then my son says the teacher wont allow him to drink his water. The teacher tried to discipline by son by refusing him the afternoon snack I provided because he was talking in class. I informed them I dnt discipline my child with food. The uniforms are expensive but your child will probably not wear them much due to the teacher days that are like every other week and the extended off days for holidays. The school supply list is lengthy for a Kindergartner but I have yet to see him use any folders or notebooks or writing pad or barely anything that I bought. But my son has learned to use a laptop and is really good at it now. They handled Covid procedures well with the weekly testing. I also like how he knows how to do Math at his age already. I was beginning to teach him but it is in the school curriculum as well. I would suggest the school hires licensed teachers, particularly ones that know how to deal with a childs behavior. They should incorporate a playground so children can get outside time which will curb play time in the class. They should also work on communication and not panhandling government agencies and parents for additional funding. Not sure what they did with his 5 composition notebooks and folders that Im sure he didnt need because I have yet to see them. They probably using it for the higher grades. Smh. Im 7 months pregnant and him possible getting suspended for simple stuff a 5 year old does is stressful and annoying so Ill be changing his school. I couldnt even let him finish it out because I think they are actually trying to wean him out because I have contacted the school and teachers on multiple occasions about their teaching styles. My son would be behind if I wasnt teaching him everyday after school. Smh.
DO NOT PUT YOUR CHILD IN THIS SCHOOL! I have never heard of a school suspending a Kindergartener. There are some things that a text book or a million years of continuing education classes will NEVER teach a person about a child unless you have had one yourself. This teacher doesn’t have children and the method that she uses when a 5 year is being a 5 year old is to ignore them and then write them up for responding – like a 5 year old. I have never had any complaints from any prior educational institution or prior educator. Since enrolled, many calls have been made, almost every day about the smallest things that a typical 5 year old would do. (I saw this also mentioned in another review from a parent.) After sitting in on a video meeting – since they don’t allow you to sit in and WATCH them teach I quickly realized that there were many inadequacies that had needed to be addressed. The lack of empathy for personal family concerns was profound! The teacher blatantly stated that when her students don’t listen to her that she calls on another teacher to discipline them – unbelievable!
When given the opportunity, we are looking into disenrolling. Sadly that seems to want to be their goal – to not have to worry about taking the proper steps in resolving issues and to form a bogus paper trail to ultimately have the child out of school. With all that’s going on in this world, Covid possible inflation, lay-offs, unemployment It’s unfortunate that we can’t even be confident in our educators.
Below, I took it upon myself to Google a few things regarding properly educating a 5 year old, this is clearly NOT what is happening at this school.
“What is normal behavior for a 5 year old?
At 5-6 years, expect tricky emotions, independence, friendships and social play, plenty of talk, improved physical coordination, and more.”
“What is the best teaching method for kindergarten?
Some of the methods of teaching kindergarten kids are:
Play with your students.
Make use of toys and tools to introduce basic math.
“TEACH THE KIDS EXCITEDLY” about physical and life science.
Encourage early reading and listening skills.
Set clear and consistent behavior expectations.
Help students develop social skills.”
“What is the most effective teaching method for kindergarten?
This is why differentiation is so useful in a kindergarten classroom and why it stands out as one of the most effective teaching strategies. Here, you can assign different activities based on the needs of each student.”
I LOVE DuBois! I grew up in Clayton County but I moved as an adult and now I’m back with a family. We’ve been at DIA for two years now and I wish DIA was here when I was growing up! Mr. Cason’s vision for the community and children is truly inspiring and I am so glad my family and I get to be a part of it!
My daughter has made so many positive relationships with her classmates and staff. They show her so much love and it truly makes us feel like we’re a part of a giant family! DIA has had our backs through situations and has been very uplifting and encouraging.
For academics, my daughter’s teachers Ms. Spencer (2nd grade) & Ms. K Jackson (3rd grade) set high standards for her yet still keep her engaged which I love because during the pandemic, my daughter lost a little zeal for learning and she wasn’t taking school seriously and now she enjoys being back at school. Her teachers hold her accountable and push her to achieve greater.
Thank you DIA for all that you do! Continue to impact all those who hear the name!
