East Bendigo Primary School is a 105 years old school building with City of Greater Bendigo was originally built in 1915 as workers and their families flocked to the area to service a new railway workshops, a freezing works, a crushing plant and demand on nearby farmland. It could fit 150 students into two classrooms and was active until late 1990s until the then Kennett government began closing schools. White Hills Secondary College has taken the students from East Bendigo State School in 1999 and later it changed its name to Weeroona College. The East Bendigo School Building was idle since then.
City of Greater Bendigo Council considers it historically significant but Heritage Victoria did not include it their state register after its assessment in 2016 mentioning- “The East Bendigo Primary School building is architecturally unremarkable and of a less distinctive design when compared with school buildings constructed in a similar period in the Victorian Heritage Register,” while the Heritage Council acknowledged the building had withstood the ravages of time and the assessor noted that “The school building is reasonably intact and retains its main features including the sign over the front entrance,”
It is a beautiful heritage space in east Bendigo and one should not miss the beauty of it in the evening sun.
