If I had the ability to score them a NEGATIVE 10 I would! This is a horrible school. I regret signing my daughter up to this school. Her high school experience was ruined. The structure is horrible. Some of the staff there are maliscious, inconsiderate and clueless. Mrs. Muños, a fascilitator, conducts herself in an unprofessional manner. I am not a parent who thinks their child is perfect, I know teenagers can be difficult and challenging at times. My daughter would turn in work that she put in hard work into. Her response? It was too big. Or too much? Instead of praising, or give positive reinforcement… NO! She actually told her she did too much! Who says that? Not a good teacher or not a good counselor! It is a home school/ regular school. In the beggining of her freshman year, she only got one on-campus class. She was new, I can understand that. They assured us that by her Jr and Senior years she would have a set schedule on-campus. Not so! Even her Senior Year was 2 classes in the morning and 1 in the pm. Sports practices were all at 3pm. So, needless to say, their was a lot of driving back and forth. It took our whole family to get her through those 4 years. Luckily we are a close family. Let me add that the kids CANNOT stay on campus in between classes. They are basically forced to leave. They do not provide lunch for the kids. I can go on and on. But the straw that broke the camels back is that Mrs. Muños did not sign my daughters permission slip for Gradnight. She has done plenty of hateful things to my daughter… but this one stole the cake! Of course she called after she left the campus and wanted my daughter to return to the school and pay for her ticket at 2pm…. but emailed that if she would pay before 1pm dhe would get her ticket. What in the world? I tried calling the district, but they cannot help me. I am not sure who to report this to. If someone knows, please post it. Their is many more horrible things, but I hope this is enough to save your children from hating their high school experience. Dont do it. Do your research and send them elsewhere! Oh, one more thing… the teachers dont teach! Literally! They get packets and pray they understand the subject! Unbelievable!
Although I loved my facilitator, the front office is structured around favoritism. I went in with a dress code which is understandable that they pulled me aside. Not even 5 minutes later (I’m still in the office) a girl walks in with her whole behind hanging out, fishnets under (also dress code) continued to talked to her about random things not including her dress code, then proceeded to let her go in. My shorts were definitely longer than that, yet they didn’t pull her aside? Along with the fact that almost every campus guard is so rude, I had one yell at me because I asked to grab my books and packets from my facilitator not even one room down. Also because of my shorts. I’m not trying to be rude here but I am not a hoochie and I do not go around wearing shorts that my behind shows out of. They expect us to wear shorts that go to our knees. Which would be fine if they paid for the clothes I wear and every other female got the same treatment, if my mom is okay with the shorts I wear (I have a strict mother) why in any way should I be sexualized at a school where it is supposed to be a safe place, then other students get away with it because of well, favoritism. I understand not letting the children go around wearing extremely provocative clothing, but if a child is wearing something that rather makes themselves feel good, why ruin that. What because it affects boys? What about how it affects girls? I don’t know a male that would say, “oh my gosh her shorts don’t go to her knees how hot I can’t focus.” That’s just not how it works. Definitely needs to work on being a little less harsh on the students.
This school, as most charter schools in California, is centered around home study. In a student’s first year it is unusual to get into the “workshops” that are held on campus. All work is given in a study packet and it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure these packets are completed and understood. There is tutoring available and each family is assigned a facilitator who guides the process, but in the end, if the parent(s) is/are not involved, the student will suffer.

We found our facilitator invaluable when adapting to this school. She answered emails promptly and did her best to answer or find answers for our questions. We found most of the teachers we encountered to be student oriented and the staff was helpful and friendly. As with all institutions there were exceptions.

The main fault of the testing is that it is only based on multiple choice questions. There is not enough writing assigned and there are no essay tests. These faults aside, if you are looking for a non-traditional school whose goal it is to help students succeed, Excelsior is a reasonable choice.
