We did three semesters of backfloat baby and one of the little toddler swimmers and saw very little progress for our son (and many lessons full of tears). While he is more sensory-sensitive, he is completely capable of learning to swim with the right support and instruction. We had 4 different instructors and while they were nice people, they did not adjust their teaching methods to make it a fun and rewarding experience for our kid. I brought my concerns up with management and they were not very helpful. I finally asked to get in the pool for the last couple of lessons and I was able to make more progress in two weeks than in the previous year. There was another very hesitant child in our group and she barely sat in the water for the two months of lessons. He parents were also very frustrated that the instructor was not able to adjust their lessons.
The environment in the pool area is total chaos in the evening and the weekends (when most working parents are able to take their kids). They jam pack the lessons in back-to-back so there is no time to talk to the instructor. It’s noisy and so crowded in there, I felt claustrophobic and overwhelmed and I wasn’t the one swimming.
If your kid has zero hesitations about water and new experiences, they should do okay here. If they are on the more sensitive side or take longer to adjust to new situations I would look elsewhere.
Loved doing Baby Backfloat 1 with our little one! The instructors (Isabel in particular), are so upbeat and enthusiastic, and the routine had all the babies in the class enjoying themselves consistently! Really glad we signed up and got him comfortable in the water! They definitely squeeze in lots of classes at the same time, but we had plenty of space for our activities and family members to watch. Since they do so many classes, we could easily find a time that works with our schedule. Also, I think it really helped my kid to see other happy “big kids” doing all levels of swimming around him.
As a matter of “you get what you pay for”, Foss Swim School has been with every penny for our kids. They have had a variety of teachers, but each and every one has been committed to the lesson plan and we have seen consistent progression. Regardless of whether there is a small hurdle here or there, our kids have been supported by the instructors and they have gotten over it. There is always an underlying commitment to safety with the staff, but they have also continually provided a fun environment for our kids to enjoy themselves and advance their swimming skills.
