We cannot sing the praises of Futures Academy – Pasadena and our son’s math teacher at Futures (Ali) enough. Our son has a natural ability for math and always somewhat indifferently breezed through math classes until a certain math class and teaching approach came along and tripped him up. Specifically, our son’s regular school Algebra II teacher gave the students pre-recorded, monotonous lectures and “free time” to complete and self-correct homework, with no interaction, feedback or accountability. This combination did not work for our son who thrives in a robust, teacher-led classroom but was adrift in this largely self-guided environment. Our son began to hate math and question his natural ability for math. Then, wonderfully, we discovered Futures – Pasadena – and everything changed for the better. Our son retook a semester of Algebra II through Futures to solidify the basics needed to succeed at the next level of math and on standardized tests. His Futures teacher immediately engaged him and challenged him and made math accessible and easy again. He taught him tips and shortcuts. The teacher showed him alternative ways to work math problems. All of this restored our son’s confidence and also taught math as it is best learned – conceptually, not by memorization in a solitary manner. With the help of Futures, our son consistently received high scores on his tests – demonstrating the superiority of the Futures teaching and methodology. This year, he opted to take his math component through Futures, not through his regular high school. We are so happy to have Futures – Pasadena and Ali for our son’s math this year. Best of all, our son is really thrilled to have Ali as his teacher again and said, “this is the only math class I’ve ever looked forward to and loved.” I think that says it all.
We just want to share our fantastic experience with Futures Academy, and their educational staff and Administrators. Our son attended both his 11th and 12th grade at Futures Academy Pasadena Campus. He was struggling both from an educational and social perspective at his public school. Over the course of the two years in which he attended Futures Academy, he completed his course work, drastically improved his GPA, made friends, and is truly a changed young man. The small class size and 1:1 attention he received from teachers and counselors made all the difference. I am proud to share that he was accepted to 5 out of 5 universities to which he applied, and selected the University of San Francisco; which also has smaller class sizes and student to teacher ratios.
We credit our son’s success to the guidance he received at Futures Academy, for which we will be forever grateful.
