I’ve had two boys – rambunctious boys! – have completely positive experiences at HCS. One is alumni and now in high school. After HCS he first attended another Montessori school through elementary, then transitioned to public high school successfully. My youngest son is currently in pre-school. HCS is exceptional in every way. Not only are the teachers deeply invested in their profession and committed to the children, there are many that have remained with the school for many years – this impresses me to no end because I know the allure of a larger school system must be strong for career teachers, but the HCS staff love their work and become close (appropriately, always!) with the children. It is truly like a family at HCS, with many involved and supportive parents who are readily welcomed by the staff as volunteers and understandably concerned parents. It’s hard for some moms and dads to leave their little ones in someone else’s hands, and HCS quickly puts parents at ease. The Montesorri system is incredible, evidenced by the many successful figures who are Montessori alumni. Most children quickly become independent and competent in all the right ways. Individual children are given the opportunity to learn at an appropriate pace for their own social and intellectual level, all the while gently encouraged to advance. We love this school, period!
My first experience with Hagerstown Children’s School began when my older son was ready for a Pre-K environment. At that time this was not offered in the public school system. Someone had suggested that I check the Montessori program at HCS. We visited the school and loved it. Our son finished his Pre-K and Kindergarten with HCS.

When our next son was getting ready for Pre-K I already knew that I would send him to HCS.

The staff encourage the children and treat them as if they were their own. It’s refreshing to have a school that is able to allow a child to progress at their own pace. If they are advancing in any area they are encouraged to keep going. If they are struggling, they will work with them and help them master tasks.

Each child is given an opportunity to be a helper in the classroom. This allows them to be first in line, help with the weather maps and help the teacher. It’s a pretty big deal! My son always wants to get to school on time so that he doesn’t miss seeing his name up as a helper.

Now that they have moved to their new location, the school is bigger, brighter and the outdoor play area is great. The kids often call it their “park”.

I would recommend HCS to anyone!

A beautiful, clean and caring place to begin my child’s educational journey. I highly recommend this Montessori based school for children age 2-6.

I have had 3 children go to HCS, all from age 2 through Kindergarten. The emphasis on personal responsibility, kindness and respect for others filters over into our children’s home life.

The staff is well educated in the Montessori way and the hands on learning has proven to be an excellent choice for us. New work for the children is changed out regularly, keeping the kids interested and excited to go to school. Topics such as famous artists, classical music, poetry, China, Egypt and so many more teach the kids without them even know they are learning!
