I am an HMSA alumni. The school did well in preparing their students for college but completely ruined their GPAs which then results in many brilliant students not getting into universities they strive to get to. On the other hand, you have less intelligent students getting into those universities because it’s way easier to get better GPAs at other schools. I got a 3.0 GPA at HMSA which is the minimum for UC univerties. However, I was declined to most UCs. Now that I’m at college, I’m acing every class I get. If you have an outstanding worth ethic then go to this school. You will get depressed and stressed with all the work and their strict rules. You get at least three hours of homework every day without AP classes. If you want to get into a top tier schools such as UCLA, you have a higher chance going to Hawthorne High, Lawndale, etc and getting a great and easier GPA there.
When I started going to HMSA I was on my second year of learning English. Even though I struggled a lot, I strongly believe this high school prepared me for college. Yes, some teachers are strict and expect a lot from you, but it helps in the long run. They try to teach you how to become responsible. I agree my GPA wasn’t the best compared to my friends who went to Leuzinger, Hawthorne, or Lawndale, but when I started college I found it so much easier to adapt. I knew how to write college level essays and was very used to studying rigulously. I understand this school might not be for everyone, but if you work well under pressure, and your goal is to go to college this is the place to go. I never thought I was going to be able to go to a UC while I was still learning English. This school helped me get there, but it’s also what you make of it.
