Howard high school is a nice facility. Many of the teachers are kind, treat their students with respect and are good at teaching. The problem mostly lies with the administration. The system itself is odd as well as the people running it. For some reason the school has one principal and five assistant principals. I have not had much contact with most of them, but the ones i have spoken to have treated me disrespectfully and tend to act that way with most other students and staff. I say ‘most other students’ because they tend to pick favorites. The favoritism does not mean anything like better grades, but more like being “allowed” to slightly break policy. If you are a favorite student then your morning coffee might not be taken away from you, even though many other kids might have to throw away their coffee. The staff breaks their own policies too. Almost all teachers eat in their classrooms while food is not allowed to be eaten outside of the cafeteria. One of the assistant principals who often can be seen throwing away students coffee has been seen walking in the hallways drinking her own. I personally have gotten into verbal fights with an assistant principal in which she claimed that i am completely disrespectful and a liar. To conclude: i do not like Howard. The administration system is, to put it simply, weird.
Not the perfect school when I attended 35 years ago – one of my teachers was drunk half the time while another couldn’t even spell lasagna (argued with me that it wasn’t “NGA” at the end). But it was the springboard of my professional career. Recently returned and the admin didn’t bat an eye that an alum was there. Looks alot like when I roamed the halls, and my mind flooded with moments and friendships.
“Hail Howard High School, we sing to thy praise; we will stand by you through all of our days!”
Howard High School gives student equal opportunities to learn. For those who would like to excel further than standard classrooms, there are GT (Gifted & Talented), AP (Advanced Placement), and Honors versions of classes. Howard High school has many programs to try and help students feel accepted on a social level such as the Best Buddies program. The teachers are well trained, however sometimes students can be very distracting.
