some teachers here are amazing. on the other hand, some will accuse you of things you don’t do and when you don’t get the way they’re teaching, they don’t try to help you at all. if you start falling behind at Indian river you get no help at all because they’ll call you a “slacker” and blame you if you’re having trouble. the guidance counselors nit pick at you, an example as to when we went down for scheduling i asked for geometry straight, she told me “i don’t think you can handle that” and proceeded to tell me that i shouldn’t go for an advanced diploma. the buses in Chesapeake school district, also terrible. I’m obviously a student at Indian river and I’ve had four different bus drivers since September or we double bus and a lot of the kids on our bus end up missing it for coming to early or late. most of our parents work and we can’t get to school and I don’t see the school board addressing this issue or our principle. if you get in ‘trouble’ at Indian river the assistant principals do not give you a chance to explain your story, they believe the teachers over everyone, even if the teacher falsely accuses you. overall Indian river is a beautiful school and mrs Dunbar is a great principle but some of the teachers are unacceptable and do not help students with material at all and the bus situations are terrible. just an opinion. I’ve been here for three years and will not continue at this school my senior year, I will not graduate from a school that doesn’t care about anyone’s opinion. hickory or great bridge here i come!
I had a few great teachers including miss Tiderman the art teacher, mrs shuclar the drama teacher and Mr Fry the old principal. But in my time there as a student I had also experienced teaches who would scream red in the face at students, some staff who seemed like bullies (I had medication for depression and an anxiety disorder, I broke dress code ONE TIME and was treated poorly, criticized and yelled at by staff and my mother had made one of them fb was a apology to me. Though it was obviously wasn’t sincere and this staff women always seemed rude to me.). Teachers would hear and see kids bullying, whether verbally or physically (usually verbally) other kids and say nothing. Lots of fights at the school. Other students were extremely aggressive at times and would make threats for little reasons even for things as simple as accidentally standing in front of lockers. Mr. Fry was an amazing and kind principal but a lot of the staff and teachers there’s I felt did not care. The students even thought it was justified to bully others. The art programs/classes were underfunded vs the sports as I saw my own teachers buy us supplies from their own wallets. My experience at Indian river is one I’m happy I don’t have to ever go through again and I know many fellow students who feel the same way and had similar experiences.
