I went here for all 3 years and I’ll tell you half of these reviews are terrible representation. The air conditioning is broken 98% of the time, there’s fights almost every week. Constant sex, drugs, and stealing. I was even on the popular side of things so it wasn’t like I had “the bad end.” The magnet is honestly the equivalent to what should be the whole school, in one of my English classes (besides for 99%) got a class average of 60% ON NOUNS. There’s a few teachers who are good from when I was there like: Ms. Lessenberry, Dr. Hearn, and Ms. Breslin and Mr. Fisher. But otherwise the teachers don’t care about you, unless they need you to pass. The staff doesn’t quite know how to run things. They enforce a harsh “regime” to stop bad behavior but it honestly causes the issues. They need to dismiss lunch all at once and just watch the doors, allow anyone to sit by anyone and let them use the bathroom during lunch, but not leave the cafeteria. Give kids the option to take lunch to a teachers class if they get a pass for extra help. It’s run like a prison. If you go here please don’t give in to the culture, or you will come out with a type of problem whether it’s substance abuse, bullying, self harm, sex, stealing, etc. Not to mention the art teacher is abusive to anyone who isn’t good at art and is trying to learn, it got me into a terrible place that took half my high school career to unlearn. I managed to get accepted into a phenomenal magnet program for high school and have been able to to turn my life around, though I struggle with things everyday that I wish I would’ve learned. If you or you’re kid can’t catch up to things easily, don’t send them here. It’s a death sentence.
The school’s magnet program is good. I am able to be 3 years ahead in high school because I was in magnet and took high school classes here, and overall, I was taught well. I enjoyed my first 2 years here as they wasn’t much to see (ex-fights, staff issues) and in the first 2 years anti-bullying was enforced through the old dean. 8th grade took a turn however when new staff had showed up, and now all of a sudden the gym had now a useless one way hall, the staff were extremely strict and Guinn now had an even worse “be nice to people” system. One of my friends got sent to the dean for simply standing up. Standing up. Like dude. What kind of staff does that. As for the system it’s supposed to teach kids to do the right thing for points, and personally, it can work. However it can get annoying, but it was also equally annoying to hear juniors trying to protest the school in any way they could. Fights broke out quite often in this school and if the school had been magnet-program only I believe it would’ve been better. I even experienced a firework being blown right behind me while peacefully eating my lunch—damn. The good things about this school are simply the music programs, and some of the teachers that made the year tolerable. Overall, I would’ve recommended this place 1-2 years ago but now, I feel like the school’s taking a turn. ?? ?????
Don’t let these reviews lie to you. This school is horrible. A lot of people say racial slurs. The staff, they just don’t care. A student told me to, “send her to the gas chamber, she’s a jew”. I’ve been called the n word, with the er at the end. The staff just gives the students a warning. Fights happen, at least once every 2 weeks. There’s smoking in the bathrooms. A lot of dating and touching. Teachers don’t care what you do. Mostly all the students do drugs. The dean just doesn’t care. The only good teacher, the truly cares is Mr.Fisher. Mrs. Tapp makes fun of her kids. She said “I don’t know what up to you, but I think it’s that hair, you need to change it”. She also asked me if my hair was real or fake. She calls people dummies. Teachers can’t control their classes. I went to this school for 6th grande and 7th. I DONT recommend to send YOUR child here.
